Job Description

Would people describe you as serious and highly reliable? Are you known for your ability to execute with a high degree of expediency and accuracy? Want to help make the world a safer, more sustainable and more creative place? If so, Black Spectacles’ Engineering Manager role may be the perfect opportunity for you to grow in your career!

At Black Spectacles, we’re a purpose driven company, aimed squarely at educating and inspiring architects across the world so they can thrive in their careers.

Our platform attracts architects around the world who want to push the limits of their industry. Our content — which includes podcasts, design tutorials and exam prep — helps architects keep pace with emerging technologies and software so they can do their best work.

Black Spectacles is Chicago-based with a fully remote staff. We are a BuiltIn Chicago Best Places to Work 2022 winner, and ranked #11 in Education on the INC. 5000 America’s Fastest Growing Company List in 2019. To keep that momentum going strong, we’re expanding our team of enthusiastic go-getters. We’re on the hunt for an Engineering Manager to manage and scale our engineering team.

You will:

  • Hire, lead, and mentor an innovative team of software engineers, software architects and quality engineers – growing people as you grow our business and technology.
  • Establish technical design and architecture for new and existing software products
  • Design, implement, and refine product development, testing, and Dev-Ops processes
  • Review code and establish our coding best practices
  • Hands-on coding of critical components of our systems
  • Accurately estimate project timelines while maintaining a strong focus on quality of work
  • Adapt to external factors as they arise and take the lead with a positive outlook towards getting things done
  • Collaborate with product, design and other functional teams to establish product development roadmap

Key outcomes of the job:

  • Define engineering best practices and technical roadmap
  • Ownership of team’s roadmaps, plans, estimates and milestones
  • Ownership of software architecture, technical design, and code review (frontend, backend, and database)

Requirements

You might be a great fit if you:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • Have substantial demonstrated experience in engineering management positions involving leadership of software development, program management, quality, and technical design/architecture functions.
  • Have substantial demonstrated experience as a Technical Lead/Architect who can design software solutions, review code for frontend, backend and database stack
  • Have outstanding people management skills; you are kind, empathetic, and capable of enforcing high standards while still being able to mentor, guide and continuously improve your team. You can foster collaboration, maintain productive communication, and still meet deliverables/deadlines outlined by the organization.
  • Have experience mentoring junior engineers
  • Have a willingness to ask questions and accept constructive criticism.
  • Have AWS (working experience designing, developing solutions using cloud services)
  • Have experience with SaaS applications and cloud deployments
  • Have experience with automated build and deployment tools
  • Have experience in Agile/Scrum methodology, and occasionally serving as Scrum Master
  • Know this web development toolkit: React JS, Redux, Node.js (Loopback 4, TypeORM), JavaScript, Typescript
  • Can travel to Chicago for quarterly team meetings.

It’s a nice bonus if you have:

  • Mobile App development experience
  • Experience in leading AI/ML solutions or implementations
  • Software program or project management experience

(Even if you don’t check all of these boxes, we’d still love to hear from you!)

Benefits

  • ‘Work from wherever’ policy
  • Unlimited Vacation
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield health, dental, vision, short-term / long-term disability and life insurance
  • Flexible Savings Accounts and Health Savings Accounts
  • 401k with Employer match
  • Profit sharing program
  • Employee referral program
  • Commuter pre-tax program
  • Frequent team events & quarterly social gatherings
