Enterprise Reporter
Job Description
Summary:
Are you an energetic and resourceful reporter who gets a kick out of tackling the most important stories of the day? In this role we're looking for someone who can slice off a meaningful chunk, give it context and a Bay Area spin, and turn it around for the next day's paper. We've dubbed this role "Expert in a Day." Part of that is writing the big story of the day for Page One, and delivering crisp copy on deadline with the sweep, balance and perspective to convey its impact to our readers, either working solo or with other reporters.
You will deliver enterprise stories on a variety of regional or statewide issues of interest to our Bay Area readers. These stories will be grounded in the diverse and dynamic communities throughout the Bay Area and explain their challenges, especially those that affect people's pocketbooks: climbing insurance costs and gas prices, inflation and affordability, public safety. You will also keep eye on regional and state politics that impact our readers, from the California governor to our local state and Congressional representatives and ballot measures, write stories about personal rights and how they intersect with the state laws. In an election year like this one, you'll need to think deeply about local and regional politics. You should be able to quickly develop sources, build expertise and explain complex issues in plain language. This job is based in San Jose, the 12th largest city in the United States, but you'll likely find stories across the Bay Area, from Silicon Valley to Oakland to Walnut Creek.
Must be located in the South or East Bay Area and work at least three office days weekly in San Jose and/or Concord.
What you will do:
- Aim daily for the front page of The Mercury News and the East Bay Times and lead the papers' online reports
- Generate enterprise stories off the news; keeping in mind the Bay Area News Group's desire to make stories distinctive and local for readers living in the region
- Be highly collaborative, working with our photo and graphics team to illustrate your work
- Care about metrics and what we can learn and apply about reader interests to our work
- Adhere to the highest professional and ethical standards at all times and abide by the newspaper's written ethics policy; newsroom employees are on the front lines of protecting this newspaper's credibility
What you will bring:
- 3+ yrs of daily journalism experience; breaking news chops are essential, as is some experience with cultivating sources and using public records requests to advance reporting
- The ability to write sharp, clean copy, including headlines and nut graphs that distill why a story matters
- A self-starter attitude, able to cultivate sources, break news, and report on stories that hold public agencies accountable and engage readers about patterns and trends in the Bay Area
- Comfort working on digital deadlines in a 24/7 news cycle, and the drive to best the competition on a regular basis
- Must be able to travel for reporting
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required
Along with your resume, please submit a cover letter and 3-4 writing clips.
The hourly wage is $35.89 - $38.47 ($69,985 - $75,016). Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
