Environmental Engineer

Rijeka Gateway d.o.o. (RGW), a joint venture between A.P.Moller-Maersk Group through APM Terminals and ENNA Group through ENNA Logic, is reaching the final stage of the big project: building the high-tech Rijeka Gateway Terminal.

We've worked hard to make it happen, and soon we'll start running the new container terminal. Our main goal now is to make sure everything runs smoothly when we kick off operations. The purpose of this position is to:

• Ensure control over compliance with environment requirements from the port facilities, contractors and leasing companies and compliance with the existing EIA permit conditions, while also working towards minimizing their impact on the environment.
• Collaborate with various departments to implement sustainable practices.

Principal accountabilities:

• To follow internal regulations, Code of Conduct or any other normative documents / guidelines of the company and work in full conformance with corporate values and teamwork principle.
• Collaborate with different organizational functions as needed and contribute to overall success and process/safety improvements.
• Follow and implement applicable environmental legislation of Croatia, international conventions, and other normative documents.
• Prepare necessary legally required documentation and align Terminal environmental documentation with local legal requirements.
• Checking the territorial waters of the port on the environmental requirements.
• Control the activities of all the port subdivisions and tenant organizations in the field of environmental protection.
• Monitoring environment components compliance, data interpretation, trend analysis and mitigation measures implementation
• Supervise sampling of all environmental components sampling points to ensure compliance with legislation and Terminal documentation requirements.
• Waste Management organization and compliance with related legislation requirements.
• Maintain requested and accurate records related to all investigations linked to environmental issues, chemical log and waste shipments.
• Involvement in the implementation and activities organization of the oil spill response plan and make changes in documents if needed, as well as participate in the relevant trainings.
• In case of observing environmental pollution, participate in investigation process with appropriate response and communication with relevant stakeholders.
• Participation in the development and updating of standard operating procedures.
• Involvement in innovation ideas implementation to minimize adverse impacts of port on environment.
• Conduct and organize necessary training on environmental issues for personnel.
• As an Employer representative, lead the preparation, implementation, and certification of the ISO 14001:2015 standard.
• Developing and maintaining management information system containing information about hazardous material. Advising in case of storing and handling of the IMDG cargo inside the Terminal boundaries. Act as an Employer responsible person for work with hazardous material.
• Comply with the company’s HSSE regulations, policies, and practices.
• Execute other tasks assigned from time to time by management or immediate supervisor related to the development or execution of the business of the company.

Reporting and Scope:

• The position reports to HSSE Manager.
• The work location is Rijeka.

Critical Qualifications/Skills/Experience:

Experience:

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in within an EHS environment (knowledge in shipping, container transport and delivery industry is an advantage).
• Knowledge of environmental legislation, international conventions, and other normative documents of Croatia.
• Knowledge and experience with ISO 14001 implementation process is crucial.
• Proven ability to exercise discretion and good judgment, with an ability to understand the effect of decisions overall in the company.
• Prior working in a multicultural environment with sensitivity to cultural diversity, with respect to employees, local authorities and other stakeholders.

Skills:

• Structured, driven, self-motivating and result orientated.
• Highly disciplined – following through on actions and ensuring necessary documentation.
• Team player, able to collaborate and align on regular basis. Collaboration and alignment with terminal and project functions are key to success.
• Persuasive, being able to influence colleagues, contractors and suppliers in order to reach the target.
• Excellent communication skills, with proficient level of English and Croatian.

Education:

• University degree in technical or science majors, or related field (equivalent education and work experience may be substituted).
• ISO14001:2015 lead auditor (advantage).
