Company Overview

Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.

Job Summary

The purpose of the Environmental, Health and Safety Intern will be to engage in a variety of activities in a wide range of EHS disciplines. Under the guidance of the EHS Manager, the Environmental Intern will undertake projects directed at topics such as safety inspections, industrial hygiene, occupational ergonomics, chemical hygiene, laboratory safety, environmental compliance, job hazard analysis (JHA), hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies, and EHS database management. They will also work to provide EHS assistance to multiple teams in need.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with planning, implementing, and maturing the site’s EHS programs. Including:
    • Performing daily EHS inspections and/or walkabouts to help ensure safety and environmental compliance
      (May include maintenance of a logbook with daily activities, observations, near-misses, and incidents using iAuditor software)
    • Assist with planning, developing, and conducting EHS training
    • Verifying chemical inventories
    • Monthly fire extinguisher inspections
    • Weekly eyewash station inspections
    • Maintain PPE and other EHS consumable inventories
  • Assist with trend reports on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.
  • Assist in Hazardous Waste and Universal Waste management. Including:
    • Satellite Accumulation Area (SAA) and Central Accumulation Area (CAA) inspections
    • Waste transfers/pickups
    • Container labeling
  • Assist in performing Industrial Hygiene sampling and IH equipment maintenance & calibration.
  • Assist with environmental permitting activities including gathering information, compiling trends, and conducting inspections.
  • Examine credentials, licenses, or permits to help ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
  • All other duties as assigned by the EHS Manager.

 Qualifications

  • Enrollment in Public Health, Occupational Health, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, or related field preferred
  • Have a “can do” attitude, take direction well, be self-motivated, and communicate well with the team
  • Candidate must possess a working knowledge of EHS regulations & standards
  • Outstanding multi-tasking and presentation skills
  • Ability to create momentum and foster organizational change
  • Strong attention to detail and observational skills
  • Strong written, and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with regulatory agencies
  • Task oriented self-starter with the ability to work unsupervised
  • Proficient with computer software programs including MS Office Suite
  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently
  • Prioritizes and ensures safety of one self and others
  • Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge
  • Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges and issues
  • Experience working in a research lab or other lab-oriented environment preferred
  • Experience working in an industrial facility with engagement and mitigation of hazards preferred

Physical Conditions

  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, scissor lifts, articulated boom lifts and the like
  • Setting up and transferring temporary structures (e.g. scaffolding, ladders)
  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
  • Adjusting, moving, transporting, installing, positioning, or removing objects up to 50 pounds in all directions
  • Communicating with others to exchange information
  • Operating motor vehicles, heavy equipment or machinery
  • Use hand tools
  • Repetitive assembly operations of manufacturing test fixtures and test setups in collaboration with engineering and manufacturing teams

Safety and PPE

  • Reading and interpreting hazardous warning signs
  • Manipulating, cleaning and disposal of hazardous materials
  • Reporting issues with equipment or unsafe conditions
  • Wearing proper PPE, to include face mask, face shields, gloves, safety shoes
  • Handling of Beryllium (Be)

Travel

  • Rare travel may be required (up to 5%)

Certification

  • Capable of obtaining forklift and boom lift certification

The hourly range for this position is $25-27 employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California.
