Ascensus, a leading financial services company dedicated to helping individuals plan for a secure and prosperous retirement, is seeking a skilled Technical Writer to join our ERISA Technical Education and Communications team. We are looking for a detail-oriented and experienced Technical Writer with a willingness to learn and to help our clients understand the complex world of IRAs, HSAs, Coverdell ESAs, and qualified retirement plans.

In this role, you will research, write, edit, and proofread technical data for use in various documents and investment products, including manuals, educational course materials, and feature articles. As a Technical writer in the ERISA Department at Ascensus, you will ensure technical documentation is accurate, complete, meets ERISA and editorial specifications, and adheres to standards for quality, format, and style. As part of this position, you will also answer consulting questions from our financial organization partners about IRAs and other retirement accounts.

Responsibilities include collaborating with subject matter experts (SMEs) to gather information and ensure accuracy, understand the latest regulations, laws, and guidelines related to the retirement industry to ensure compliance and accuracy, and review and revise existing course material and manuals, making updates as needed to reflect regulatory changes or improvements in clarity.

Job Functions, Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Ascensus is seeking a Technical Writer to research, write, edit and proofread technical data for use in documents or sections of documents such as manuals, procedures and specifications.

Consulting - Provide consulting services to internal and external clients on technical, plan design and corrections issues.

Training - Conduct presentations at the ERISA technical consulting meeting or other internal ERISA department training. Conduct internal basic technical training. Conduct external seminars and webinars.

Course Development - Review, audit, and update existing basic and intermediate internal or external training modules.

Legal Document Drafting - Demonstrate a functional knowledge of Ascensus documents.

Forms - Demonstrate a functional knowledge of Ascensus plan forms and notices.

Employer Level Document Drafting - Audit employer level plan document preparation. Propose customized text for employer level plan document preparation.

Document Reviews - Review and map documents.

Business Unit Policies and Procedures - Demonstrate functional knowledge of policies and procedures.

Fee-for-Service Engagements - Independently perform fee-for-service engagements. Independently perform basic external fee-for-service consultations. Assist with advanced fee-for service consultations.

Special Projects IT, project management - Participate in special projects.

Research - Complete basic technical research projects and present the findings.

Technical Writing - Write articles for Ascensus publications and newsletters.

Legislation, Regulatory and Judicial Review - Analyze and interpret general legislative, statutory, regulatory, or case law guidance. Determine the impact general legislative, statutory, regulatory, or case law guidance has to the industry and/or on Ascensus products, services, and/or systems.

Technical Knowledge - Demonstrate a functional knowledge of main plans and products.

Industry Knowledge - Demonstrate basic knowledge of the retirement plans industry including the applicable regulatory agencies (e.g., DOL, IRS, HHS).

Continuing Education - Enhance technical and industry knowledge by attending continuing education classes.

SLAs - Meet department service level standards.

Miscellaneous - Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Training - Successfully complete CISP, CIP, QP Blitz, ASPPA RPF, QKA, ACFC, GBA 1, internal written exam applicable to area of Technical Expertise.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Finance, or a related field. Master's degree is preferred.
  • Proven experience as a technical writer or legal reviewer, particularly in the financial or retirement industry.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with an ability to simplify complex financial concepts.
  • Willingness to learn and undergo training to expand your knowledge of the field.

Experience, Skills, Knowledge Requirements

External Financial Services Industry Designations - Special Consideration given for CFP, CTFA, CFA, CEBS preferred Insurance or securities licenses preferred but will not be maintained.

Technical Expertise Designations/Certifications/Exams -

  • IRA - internal oral exam.
  • QP - internal oral exam.
  • H&B - CHSP or CFC, SHRM or HRCI, internal oral exam.

Industry Experience - special consideration given to Ascensus experience or industry experience

Software Applications - Demonstrate intermediate proficiency in Outlook and MS Office software applications, specifically Word, Excel, Power Point, Teams.
