Job Description

Do you have a strong background in finance coupled with a passion for sustainability and eager to make a significant impact on Hempel’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) strategy? As an ESG Controller, you'll join a dedicated team of specialists driving transparency and accountability in our sustainability initiatives. This is your chance to contribute to meaningful change and help shape the future of our company. Are you ready to take on this challenge and grow with us?

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented ESG Controller to join our Finance Team on a temporary basis. Here you'll become part of a dynamic team of highly skilled specialists dedicated to external financial reporting. This role is critical as we prepare to meet the requirements of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), with our first reporting year set for 2025.

As the ESG Controller, you will collaborate closely with our Sustainability Team and engage with various departments across the organization to ensure robust and compliant ESG reporting processes. You will focus on developing accounting manuals, policies, and data collection procedures that align with CSRD and EU Taxonomy standards. Your contributions will help establish a strong foundation for transparent and reliable ESG disclosures, positioning the company for long-term success in this evolving regulatory landscape.

Key Responsibilities:

As ESG Controller, your primary responsibility will be to support the ongoing ESG project aimed at preparing Hempel for compliance with the new CSRD requirements, ensuring readiness for reporting for  reporting year 2025. You will collaborate closely with the project leads in both the Finance Team and the Sustainability Team to align efforts and achieve project goals effectively.

  • Develop and document ESG accounting manuals, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with CSRD and EU Taxonomy requirements.

  • Map and formalize processes for ESG data collection, integrating inputs from different parts of the organization.

  • Collaborate closely with the Sustainability Team to align financial and non-financial ESG reporting processes.

  • Engage with stakeholders across the organization to gather, validate, and analyze ESG-related data.

  • Ensure ESG reporting processes meet regulatory deadlines and align with internal objectives.

  • Stay informed about CSRD, EU Taxonomy, and other relevant standards, providing recommendations for compliance and best practices.

What do you need to be successful in this role?

As a ESG Controller, you are a reliable, honest, and collaborative team player who operates with integrity, accountability, and a hands-on approach, taking ownership and working independently while supporting colleagues. Skilled in communicating with employees at all levels of the organisation, you maintain high standards, balance theory with practice, and excel in dynamic environments.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • Approximately 3-5 years of experience in financial accounting, policy development, or similar roles.

  • Experience in ESG reporting or sustainability projects is an advantage but not required.

  • Familiarity with CSRD, EU Taxonomy, and ESG frameworks (e.g., GRI, TCFD) is an advantage.

  • Proven ability to document accounting policies and processes with precision.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders across departments.

  • Interest in ESG principles and sustainable business practices.

  • Proficiency in Visio and Microsoft Office programs.
