HDR Engineering is currently seeking an Estimating Lead to join our growing Resources Business Group in Michigan.

Primary Responsibilities

The Estimating Lead is responsible for delivering a total project or program estimate for assets common in the Resources Business Group (RBG) such as industrial facilities, pipelines and terminals, substations and transmission lines, renewable resources, power generation facilities, CHP facilities, etc. In this role, the Estimating Lead will work with the Project or Program team to understand the scope of work, purpose of the estimate, and to develop an estimating approach and appropriate estimate classes to meet the client's need. Depending on the types of projects and estimate, the Estimating Lead may manage a team of estimators or work independently to develop the estimates. In addition, as RBG Estimating Lead, this role will also include establishing and improving RBG's cost estimating processes and implementing estimating standards and rigor consistent with industry standard practice. These responsibilities include working with other leaders within RBG to create estimating templates, implement cost estimating processes and procedures, outreach and training to RBG's staff, and working with other BG's estimating lead to continually improve quality and consistency of our cost estimating practice.

Responsibilities

  • Assume leadership responsibilities for delivering comprehensive multi-disciplinary cost estimates for industrial facilities, power generation facilities, power delivery infrastructure, and other similar projects. Cost estimates should include direct and indirect costs, owner's cost, contingency, financial costs, etc.
  • Perform a risk-based and quantitative statistical analysis such as Monte-Carlo to arrive at the appropriate amount of contingency.
  • Recommend escalation projections to be used in the estimate using a sound and defendable basis.
  • Build up labor rates taking into consideration on labor availability in the geographical area, labor strategy (open shop vs union), labor productivity, etc.
  • Prepare, review or assess unit rate based on craft mix and labor rates for installation hours.
  • Assemble a qualified review team to perform quality review on the estimate.
  • Establish procedures to guide the estimating process within the business group.
  • Network with corporate Project Delivery Services to leverage best practices, skillsets and resources from other business groups.
  • Manage a team of estimators, remotely or in-person, from various disciplines to deliver project estimates.
  • Apply AACE estimating guidelines when preparing estimates
  • Support Project and Program Managers in laying out a plan to accomplish the level of accuracy desired for the estimate
  • Work with other project team members including technical staff, cross sector staff, project controls, field services and commissioning services to take into accounts cost associated with each of these fields.
  • Collaborate with cost control manager to have a plan on how to transition cost estimate to project/program budget.
  • Work with project team and client to prepare cost breakdown structure or code of accounts to facilitate cost and progress tracking during execution
  • Prepare estimate basis memorandum clearly documenting estimating approach, intent of the estimate, documents and data used to develop the estimate, as well as as limitations/assumptions.
  • Mentor young professionals with an interest in cost estimating
  • Collaborate with other estimating leads in the development and maintenance of our internal cost estimating database (SAGE)

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Management or closely related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in estimating including lead projects and teams.
  • Strong understating of AACE cost estimating standards and approach
  • Experience leading cost estimating effort for industrial facilities with capital values of $300M or more
  • Familiar with estimating using various delivery methods including traditional design bid build (DBB), design-build (DB), EPCm, progressive design build (PDB), Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), and/or construction management at-risk (CMAR).
  • Strong leadership skills with experience building a cohesive team culture and managing team members located in various locations.
  • Excellent communication skills. Comfortable presenting in front of clients and other project stakeholders.
  • Proficient with cost estimating software (eg. sage, cleopatra, etc.) functions and objectives

  • Preference given to local candidates
  • Professional Engineering License
  • AACE Certified Estimating Professional & Certified Cost Professional
