Job Description

The EU Government Affairs team at Haleon is looking for a Government Affairs professional to join a dynamic and dedicated team that drives and delivers government and public affairs strategy for Haleon in Brussels and in support of the business across Europe.

About the position:

You will be responsible for championing EU sustainability initiatives, monitoring all EU legislation and policy related to sustainability, including decarbonization, circular economy, climate change, and natural resources.

You will work in close cooperation with the Haleon Sustainability team to provide corporate affairs support in defining and executing a government and public affairs strategy to support delivery of our Responsible Business and overall business strategy. You will identify risks and opportunities to the delivery of our strategy and develop the policy positions and external collaborations needed to help create an enabling external environment that supports delivery of our Responsible Business goals.

This position will report to the EU Government Affairs Director. Location: Brussels Office, EU quarter in Brussels Avenue des Arts.

Key responsibilities

Sustainability Policy Monitoring:

  • Continuously monitor and analyze EU legislation and policy developments related to sustainability.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of new EU policies, legislations and initiatives, evaluating their implications for the business.
  • Develop and maintain an extensive database of relevant EU legislation and policy documents.
  • Contribute to reports and policy briefs for senior management, highlighting key developments, potential impacts, and strategic recommendations.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to EU industry fora, working groups, and conferences to stay ahead of policy trends and emerging issues and help shape their future direction.

Risk and Opportunity Identification:

  • Identify and assess risks and opportunities arising from EU sustainability-related legislation and policy changes, providing strategic insights to senior management.
  • Develop proactive measures and contingency plans to mitigate risks and capitalize on opportunities, ensuring the company remains compliant and competitive.
  • Create and maintain a risk management framework specific to EU sustainability issues, regularly reviewing and updating it to reflect current and future challenges.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for EU sustainability policy matters within the organization, facilitating knowledge sharing and best practice dissemination.
  • Contribute to internal working groups and task forces focused on sustainability initiatives, providing corporate affairs perspective and ensuring alignment and integration with broader corporate goals.

Strategy Development and Advocacy:

  • Support the Sustainability team in the ongoing development and execution of Haleon’s Responsible Business strategy, aligned to the company’s broader business objectives.
  • Engage with EU policymakers, industry associations, and other relevant stakeholders to advocate for favorable policy and regulatory outcomes that support the company's sustainability goals.
  • Participate in EU consultations, provide expert input, and draft position papers to shape sustainability policies that align with the company's interests.
  • Build and maintain robust relationships with EU external partners and stakeholders, enhancing the company's reputation as a leader in sustainability.
  • Map and coordinate Haleon’s wider participation in industry fora on sustainability topics, ensuring senior leaders representing Haleon are equipped to advocate for favorable policy and regulatory outcomes that support our sustainability goals. Understand the formal and informal links between these industry fora and help Haleon to build the profile, relationships and connections needed to increase our influence in those fora.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Public Policy, Law, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a similar role, preferably within the healthcare industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of EU sustainability legislation and policy, with a proven track record of policy analysis and advocacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute corporate affairs strategies, with a focus on sustainability.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and mitigate risks and capitalize on opportunities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • High personal accountability and integrity.
