Events Technical Director

Powerhouse Arts is a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression. Housed in a purpose-built-facility in Brooklyn, the organization hosts an extended network of art and fabrication professionals and educators who work together to co-create and share artistic practices vital to the well-being of artists and the communities to which they serve. Our new facilities house fabrication services, production services, production spaces, and member workshops for artisans.
We are seeking an Events Technical Director who will assist in Event Production and Operations in all aspects of the planning, implementation and safe installation, execution, and de-installation of rental, subsidized rental, partnership and Powerhouse internal events and programs. This role will provide a high level of customer and artist technical and logistical support and an effective and time-efficient approach to venue improvement and maintenance in all areas of entertainment technology and infrastructure. This role will report to Director of Event Production and Operations and work closely with the Events, Operations, Marketing, and Development teams. Â
Responsibilities:
Venue / Technical Infrastructure / Equipment
- Support final steps of Capital project close out in particular as pertains to the AV and architectural lighting scope and create user friendly manuals and documentationÂ
- Work with Director of Event Production and Operations to identify further infrastructural and equipment needs in order to maximize the functionality of PHA’s event spaces
- Help identify optimal processes and workflows to utilize PHA’s event spacesÂ
- Finish integrating and cataloguing equipment from initial FF&E scope
- Oversee inventory, tracking and maintenance of department equipment
- Provide instruction on safe, effective and professional usage of equipment and infrastructure to technicians as well as client and artist representatives
- Perform maintenance and repairs on PHA equipment and infrastructure
- Keep all equipment storage spaces in impeccable order and constantly improve storage solutions and comprehensive labeling.
Event Planning / Installation / Execution / De-installation
- Represent PHA Event Production on assigned client or artist site visits & input relevant event related information on designated shared platform
- Attend event meetings with internal staff and external partners to prepare for upcoming events
- Assist Event Production & Operations Director in tracking event timelines and assist in communicating event logistical needs to operations and facilities and ensure follow through
- Prepare paperwork and equipment for upcoming events and programs
- Provide day to day technical support for rentals and artists
- Maintain a safe & professional work environment according to Health & Safety, DOB, FDNY and OSHA codes at all times and without exceptions
- Enforce compliance with Building Rules at all times
- Maintain overview of overall building logistics and ensure successful co-existence of shop and event usage of loading area and freight elevator
- Encourage and enforce careful handling of all equipment (rented and owned)
- Encourage and support efficient progress during all installations and de-installations.
- Reliably record and communicate any incidents or accidents
- Oversee events and programs while applying the highest expectations on technical execution and event safety
- Regularly oversee de-installation and load-out calls
Other Duties
- Attend staff meetings and applicable training sessions
- Keep up to date on the newest products and developments in all areas of entertainment technology relevant to the operations at PHA and in particular track the newest developments within the manufacturers / brands native to PHA

- Proven track record and 5+years relevant experience in professional entertainment / theater venues as well as prior experience in a supervisory position in the entertainment / technical theater field
- Highly organized, detail oriented and safety conscious
- Excellent communication, and interpersonal skills
- Specialty skills in the following areas are required: Project and labor management, basic proficiency with digital audio (Yamaha digital mixers) and PA systems, video projection and working knowledge of Q-lab and other popular control and editing software, working knowledge of Vectorworks and other widely used theatrical drafting platforms, temporary and permanent venue rigging, basic carpentry and familiarity with the use of power tools, working knowledge and hands on experience with entertainment power and lighting
- Eagerness to expand expertise to other specialty skills
- Experience in fine arts handling and installation a plus
- Understanding of financial management and budgeting of repair, maintenance and improvement projects
- Hands on approach on a day-to-day basis and especially in unforeseen situationsÂ
- Flexible approach to working hours (the position is based on 40 hours per week, though due to the nature of event bookings, weeks with longer work hours followed by the immediate usage of comp time may be required)
Compensation & Benefits: Salary range is $70,000-$90,000 and commensurate with experience. Benefits include health insurance, an employer-sponsored retirement plan, generous paid vacation, and a Citibike membership.
