Fabrication & Installation Specialist
Job Description
Powerhouse Arts is a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression. Housed in a purpose-built-facility in Brooklyn, the organization hosts an extended network of art and fabrication professionals and educators who work together to co-create and share artistic practices vital to the well being of artists and the communities to which they serve. Our new home houses fabrication services, production services, production spaces, and member workshops for artisans.Â
We are seeking fabricators and installers who will work collaboratively with other crew members to fabricate, assemble, troubleshoot, install, clean and document artwork of all types and sizes at public squares, galleries, museums, parks, and building commons. We’re interviewing makers in one or more of the following fields: carpentry, metalwork, painting, designing, art-handling, textiles, lighting and electronics, or related fields. Fabricators & Installers will report to the Director of Public Art. Employees will work on a part-time, as-needed, project basis.
Responsibilities
- Artwork fabrication, in-shop and in-field, corresponding to specialty and ability
- Assembly, troubleshooting, and staging of artwork
- Packing, handling, installing, deinstalling, cleaning, and documenting artwork and equipment
- Preparing, cleaning, and organizing shops, work areas, and exhibition sites
- Loading and unloading vehicles
- Traveling to exhibition sites
- Equipment and materials procurement research and errands
- Completing timesheets, project logs, and special training, as needed
- Executing any of the above tasks outdoors, as needed
QualificationsÂ

- 2-years fabrication experience in any field
- Expert in one or more of the following crafts: carpentry, metalwork, painting, designing, drawing, art-handling, textiles, lighting and electronics, etc.
- Experience using any kind of lift (forklift, scissor-lift, boom-lift, etc.)
- Works well in teams and independently
- Patient with the artistic process of discovery
- Detail-oriented, spatially-aware, fastidious, and communicative
Physical Requirements & Environmental Conditions
- Work on tall ladders, scaffolding, and lifts, with proper safety training and equipment
- Maneuver large and heavy objects with proper assistance and proper tools
- Safely lift a 40-pound tote-bin without assistance
- Visit sites and buildings that have stairs
- Use public transportation
Hours + Compensation
- Position is Part-time / As-needed project basis
- Projects range from two to six weeks when in production
- Work typically is scheduled M-F between the hours of 9am – 6pm
- Some weekend and evening hours will be requested where needed during special projects
- This position is not eligible for benefit programs
- The rate of pay starts at $35 per hour
