Failure Analysis Engineer

Position Overview:

Solid Power is seeking a Failure Analysis Engineer to join our talented team working to revolutionize the battery industry through the development of next generation, all solid-state rechargeable batteries.  Solid Power is a dynamic, fast-paced, collaborative team environment. This position will work closely with the Quality, Cell Engineering and Manufacturing teams in providing structured, formalized approach to root cause failure analysis.

 Job Duties:

• Plan, execute and document battery failure analysis work to support R&D, Cell Development and Manufacturing Teams.
• Acquire, interpret, summarize, and communicate thermal, electrochemical, and mechanical cell test data to functional partners.
• Identify appropriate analytical tools and methods to validate specific root cause hypotheses.
• Work with external test houses, national labs, and universities as appropriate to locate resources and execute failure analysis activities.
• Develop and manage a failure analysis inspection process, working from least to most destructive techniques.
• Ensure that all necessary analytical equipment tools are available for safe, effective article inspection.
• Develop, document, and maintain failure analysis reporting formalisms.

Qualifications/Requirements:

• Minimum of bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or Chemistry with a focus on electrochemistry.
• Experience operating a variety of nondestructive and destructive analytical equipment including SEM, XRD, and X-ray imaging techniques.
• 2+ years of failure analysis experience involving scale production lithium-ion batteries.
• Strong foundation in statistical design (D.O.E.) with relevant software experience.
• In-depth knowledge of Li-ion battery cell materials, operation, performance, and failure modes.
• Strong technical communication skills and facility for communicating complex ideas to diverse audiences.
• U.S. citizenship or Permanent Residency required.

Salary Range: $62,000 - $125,000/year
