General Summary:This is the first level in a four level career path. This position is responsible for developing project management knowledge and skills; applying project tools and techniques in order to manage project activities. Project activities include, but are not limited to, establishing clear and achievable objectives and planning and directing people to reach objectives while balancing competing demands for quality, scope, time, and cost, and adapting to different concerns and expectations of stakeholders. A professional project manager should be able to manage a project without extensive knowledge of the subject matter.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Accountable for delivering results for small project initiatives within established timeframes and quality measures, initially under the guidance of a more experienced project manager.
  • Basic understanding of project management
  • Role of a project manager
  • Understanding, application, and working knowledge of the project management tools And corporate standard system development methodology (or other industry methodology) to manage assigned projects.
  • How to translate goals/objectives into future state and measurement of success
  • The process of eliciting and capturing business (non-technical) requirements
  • The basics of business requirement management and quality management
  • The basics of other key project roles (P&P, product owner, scrum master, training, etc.)
  • Development of a project plan
  • Performs the following duties on assigned small projects, initially under the guidance of a more experienced project manager:
  • Identifies project stakeholders; manages communications with the project team and stakeholders
  • Ensures business requirements are captured
  • Performs business testing planning and coordination; securing the appropriate testing resources/access, etc.
  • Structures project documentation required for assigned projects and ensures that documentation is completed and stored appropriately
  • Creates and executes project work plans (tasks, resources, timeframes and dependencies), utilizing the corporate standard methodology; revises plans as appropriate to meet changing needs and/or requirements. 
  • Tracks and reports progress against plan to the project stakeholders, including any variance along with cause and intended action
  • Identifies improvement opportunities
  • Identifies risk and manages risk mitigation plan

Leadership

  • With guidance, establishes and maintains cooperative, productive partnerships on current project/deliverables
  • With guidance, organizes and direct the activities of the project team. Prioritizes tasks to meet deliverables and commitments on time. Recommends alternatives/options to minimize any schedule delay.

Job Specifications

  • Any combination of education or experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree
  • Awareness of the corporate methodology or other industry methodologies preferred
  • Basic understanding of Unum’s products and businesses preferred
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, rapidly changing business and technical environment.
  • Has initiative and ability to set stretch goals. 
  • Analytical and problem solving skills
  • Adapt to change as it occurs
  • Basic understanding of communication planning
  • Basic understanding of contingency planning and the ability to execute when appropriate
  • Conflict resolution and negotiation skills preferred
  • Facilitation and elicitation skills preferred
  • Active listening skills and the ability to document the speaker’s key points
  • Ability to effectively articulate difficult ideas and concepts through clear and concise verbal and/or written communication.
  • Proven ability to identify and apply different communication mediums based on a content and audience at all levels (both internal and external to Unum) to achieve intended goal.
  • Strong PC skills required (Excel, Power Point, Word, etc.)

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$45,600.00-$82,100.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
