What you'll do:

The Finance Manager works closely with company leadership and the finance and accounting team to develop and maintain the medium and long-term financial plan, perform scenario analysis and to help guide strategic decision making. Understanding key components of the financial statements and how they interrelate will be crucial to provide insightful analyses, building accountability and predictability of financial performance. This position contributes to the company’s success by providing timely advice on financial strategy and operations and is the driving force responsible for maximizing Sound’s long term value by evaluating and facilitating strategic decisions, allocation and deployment of the Company’s resources. This team is responsible for leading the annual and quarterly planning process, performing financial analyses and partnering with teams across Notion to track performance at the company and strategic level.

This role manages the financial planning and reporting processes, drives the overall Finance function to elevate existing processes and tools in order to meet the needs of future growth, and oversees the development and implementation of effective, integrated systems for budgeting, payables, reporting and auditing revenues, expenditures and asset accountability.

The Finance Manager reports to the Chief Financial Officer and can be remote across the United States, or based out of our Emeryville, CA headquarters. This position does not have any supervisory responsibility.


Compensation Target

$142,000 to $157,000 base salary, plus variable compensation bonus target of 10%

Bonuses are earned based on annual company and individual performance and are prorated based on start date. 

Sound reserves the ability to adjust the compensation range based on the final candidate’s experience, skillset, and geography. Responsibilities  

  • Serve as a strategic financial partner to Sound’s business units, leveraging interpersonal skills, building partnerships based on communication, collaboration and value-based relationships
  • Drive the financial planning process at the business unit/department level, inclusive of kickoff meetings, deadlines, assumptions, data format/loads, as it applies to budgets, re-forecasts, capital planning and long-term plans, and measure the effectiveness of the planning process
  • Apply financial expertise with a firm understanding of finance and accounting concepts, superb analytical abilities and strong attention to detail
  • Provide analytical and modeling acumen in managing the business line bookings / revenue forecasting, scenario planning, reporting, variance and analyses for income statement, cash flow and balance sheet forecasts
  • Guide & consult the development of the business units’ plans and programs; provide strategic financial input and leadership on decision-making
  • Work with finance leadership to build the financial infrastructure
  • Consolidate the business unit forecast/plans into the overall corporate reporting to build a composite view of the company including profit and loss, cash flow and balance sheet impacts
  • Conduct analysis of business units, portfolio segments, geographic territories, business lines and acquisitions
  • Ensure timely and accurate business/financial reports and plans; share with all business units to increase financial transparency in management reporting and business-line performance
  • Develop error-free, relevant reporting that includes financial and operating information such as data preparation, report creation and quality control; strive to deliver insight, consistent data and effective visualizations; reports may also include variance analysis of actual spending to forecast, plan and historical level, with explanations of trends and root causes
  • Monitor operational statistics, reports trends, variances and issues; take appropriate action including proactively notifying business or financial partners/superiors
  • Monitor and report on market changes including macroeconomics and peers/competitors
  • Responsible for inventory of reports that delivers the right information to the right person at the right time; this may include maintenance of existing, development of new and retirement of outdated reports and key metrics
  • Gather, manage and manipulate data from multiple sources for analysis; identify trends, extract insights and deliver actionable presentations of findings
  • Prepare materials for external reporting, including Investor and Board of Directors, ensuring data integrity across the different sources of information

Targeted Skills & Experience

  • Significant experience with corporate finance, investment banking, business development or strategy consulting
  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or CFA preferred
  • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining financial models
  • Experienced in using SAAS and financial systems (Salesforce, Quickbooks, NetSuite, etc.), with advanced skills in Excel, Powerpoint, and G-suite
  • Ability to create attractive presentations and present information in a clear, organized way for C-level and Board audiences
  • Expert analytical skill set, including the utilization of BI, data platforms  and reporting tools
  • Experience and comfort working in a dynamic, high growth environment
  • High level of commercial and business development acumen
  • Able to solve complex problems and analyze across multi-dimensional variables
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to build relationships
