This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced finance professional to play a strategic role in supporting the growth of a scaling organization within a flexible, fully remote environment. Working closely with leadership, you will oversee core financial operations, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide critical financial insights that support informed business decisions. The role combines hands-on financial management with process improvement initiatives, leveraging modern cloud-based technologies to enhance efficiency and accuracy. You will have the autonomy to manage key financial functions while contributing to the development of a robust financial infrastructure. With a limited monthly time commitment, this position offers an ideal balance between professional impact and flexibility. It is particularly suited to a self-directed finance expert who thrives in agile, technology-driven environments.

Accountabilities:

  • Manage end-to-end monthly bookkeeping activities, including reconciliations and financial reporting up to balance sheet level.
  • Prepare accurate financial reports and provide insights to support business performance and strategic decision-making.
  • Ensure full compliance with South African tax regulations, including VAT submissions, SARS e-filing requirements, and COIDA annual returns.
  • Oversee payroll processing for a small team and manage treasury functions, including the secure preparation and loading of payments.
  • Lead the preparation of annual financial statements and coordinate financial documentation in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
  • Implement and optimize cloud-based accounting systems and financial processes to improve operational efficiency and scalability.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and ensure effective internal controls within a remote working environment.
  • Support leadership with financial planning, reporting, and process recommendations that strengthen the organization’s financial health.
  • Requirements:

    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a finance management, finance lead, or similar senior finance role.
    • Proven experience working within SME, startup, or fast-growing business environments.
    • Strong expertise in financial reporting, bookkeeping, reconciliations, and preparation of annual financial statements.
    • In-depth knowledge of South African tax legislation, VAT compliance, SARS e-filing processes, and related statutory requirements.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively within a remote and highly autonomous environment.
    • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience using cloud-based accounting platforms such as Xero, Sage One, Zoho Books, or similar systems.
    • Familiarity with online collaboration and productivity tools such as Google Workspace, Slack, Trello, or equivalent platforms.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline is preferred.
    • Professional accreditation such as SAIPA, AGA(SA), or similar is advantageous.
    • Previous experience within the education, technology, or EdTech sectors is considered a plus.
    • Benefits:

      • Flexible fractional engagement requiring approximately 15 hours per month.
      • Fully remote working arrangement with a strong emphasis on autonomy and work-life balance.
      • Opportunity to influence and strengthen the financial framework of a growing organization.
      • Exposure to innovative, technology-enabled financial operations and cloud-based systems.
      • Collaborative and agile work environment that values efficiency, innovation, and continuous improvement.
      • Meaningful strategic involvement with leadership while maintaining schedule flexibility.
      • Opportunity to contribute to the growth and long-term success of an evolving organization.
