Your Impact

Hearst Magazines is looking for a front-end engineer for the role of "Design Systems Engineer". Front-end experience in UI and experience in design is essential for this role, and prior experience with design systems is a plus. Our primary tech is React (Preact) and Next.js. In addition to JavaScript, we seek candidates with experience in CSS and JSX. Some other libraries and tools we will be using are Storybook, GraphQL, Figma, and Supernova.

What you'll do

  • Develop scalable, robust UI components that are simple to use for our engineers and work flawlessly for our users-serving a variety of use cases
  • Build interfaces for our design systems that pay careful attention to design / usability and empower our designers and engineers to efficiently do their best work
  • Implement new features and strategies for design systems in our media platform. Collaborate with creators, product managers, engineers, and provide technical assistance to product designers
  • Contribute to our design systems documentation and develop ways to harvest documentation from code and design sources
  • Help evangelize our goals in component-driven development for our user interfaces
  • Mentor contributors to our design system in sustainable development practices for user-interfaces
  • Partner with members of the design and engineering teams to understand user needs across interfaces and deliver scalable and reusable solutions that can be impactful across all brands
  • Mentor other product designers & engineers in your area of expertise, and seek mentorship from the wider organization with an eye towards pushing boundaries and keeping your skills up to date with the latest/best practices for our discipline
Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience designing and/or building web or mobile products that have been fully implemented and released to a consumer or business market.
  • Professional experience working with front-end design systems, responsive design principles, modern engineering workflows, and design systems.
  • Strong experience prototyping and building user interfaces with modern web technologies such as React or Vue, and modular, component-based applications
  • Proven experience with semantic markup and accessibility standards. Knowledge of WAI-ARIA and assistive technologies is a plus.
  • Experience using development tools, like Docker and Git for local development and app deployment
  • Familiarity with Javascript testing frameworks and libraries
  • Experience with contemporary digital product design tools and technologies. This could include Figma, Sketch, and/or the Adobe Suite.
