The roleAgile Six is looking for a Front-End Software Engineer to join a new team partnering with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to promote the health and well-being of Veterans, or family caregivers who care for Veterans, through education, resources, support, and services. By providing iterations of software development and supporting access to VA health benefits and care, including the VA.gov 10-10EZ and 10-10CG applications, our team will be instrumental in creating a fast, easy and burden free experience for eligible persons applying for health benefits through VA.gov. This important work is imperative to keeping these forms up-to-date, available, easy to use, and inclusive for users of all abilities, so they continue to be the fastest path to health benefits.
Successful candidates will be contributing to the following GitHub repositories, and potentially others within the VA ecosystem:
- https://github.com/department-of-veterans-affairs/vets-website/tree/main/src/applications/hca
- https://github.com/department-of-veterans-affairs/vets-website/tree/main/src/applications/caregivers
- Contribute as part of a cross functional Agile team to build a large, scalable web application in an open source ecosystem -
- Write front-end components using React and Javascript, leveraging software development principles and best practices
- Create 508-compliant UI components
- Leverage the US Web Design System, CSS, and other front-end styling systems and frameworks
- Design and build software with an eye towards modular, extensible, and scalable design
- Demonstrate strong communication and team collaboration skills
- Write automated unit tests and integration tests, and assist in manual testing as needed
- As an agile team member, support the team and Product Owner to ensure that work is accurately described and appropriately prioritized, including providing input into user story acceptance criteria and sizing
- Support the practice of engineering within the larger company as needed through such things as participating in an engineering community of practice and assisting in outreach, recruitment, and hiring efforts
- We expect the responsibilities of this position to shift and grow organically over time, in response to considerations such as the unique strengths and interests of the selected candidate and other team members and an evolving understanding of the delivery environment.
- At least 3 (three) years of experience as a software engineer
- At least one year of solid, full-time experience with React
- Solid understanding and experience with HTML, CSS, and Javascript
- Solid understanding of software development principles and fundamentals, and how to apply these effectively in day-to-day software development
- Ability to complete some medium to high complexity tasks and stories with assistance from more senior engineers
- Experience working on an Agile team and demonstrating an Agile mindset
- Experience in an open, collaborative development environment
- Has lived and worked in the United States for 3 of the last 5 years
- Experience with Ruby-on-Rails, NodeJS
- Experience and knowledge around 508-Compliance
- Experience with continuous integration/deployment systems, Jenkins or Github Actions
- Experience working with GitHub or other git repositories
- Experience developing in the AWS cloud
- Experience with container platforms such as Docker and Kubernetes
- Previously contributed to at least one open source project
- Familiarity with the US Web Design System
- Experience working in or with government agencies, especially the VA
- You are a U.S. Veteran

The salary for this position is $107,558 - $113,074
