Job Description

Full-Stack JavaScript Developer, Automation Team

Hearst Newspapers is looking for a talented full-stack JavaScript engineer to join the automation team, which focuses on building internal tools which improve efficiency and quality of life for other teams in the organization. An ideal candidate will have a good foundation in both front-end web technologies (HTML5, CSS3, JS frameworks) and back-end systems (Node.js). The new engineer's day-to-day work will primarily focus on front-end work, but a general familiarity with the full tech stack and a willingness to learn on the job are important. This new engineer will collaborate closely with a senior full-stack engineer on the automation team, as well as with colleagues on other teams and in other disciplines such as QA, product, and project management as needed. The new engineer will adhere to company and industry best practices in all aspects of software development, including coding standards, documentation, and testing.

This role is being offered 100% remotely and we can employ in the following states: AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, KY, KY, MD, ME, MI, MO, NC, NH, NJ, NV, NY, SC, OH, TN, TX, WA AND WI.
Responsibilities
We are looking for a bright, self-motivated JavaScript engineer who is eager to learn and grow in a supportive, fast-paced environment. We will provide training to bring you up to speed and build your skills; you will need to bring an inquisitive mind and dedication to learning every day. As you grow into the role, you will be granted more responsibility and autonomy to pursue objectives defined by the lead developer and/or project manager. Mastery of the tools and technologies we use and ownership of specific application components is the goal.

Upon being assigned a unit of work, you will discuss the task with your senior developer mentor and/or lead developer to reach a consensus on an understanding of the work objective and the means you will use to achieve it. You will then work to implement that solution independently, but questions to clear up areas of uncertainty that may arise are encouraged. You will typically have the means to test your solution in an integrated development environment and will be expected to validate that your work functions as intended without creating other adverse effects in related systems. When ready, you will submit your work for code review by a senior developer, who will provide feedback on your code's functionality, efficiency, maintainability, and style. You and your code reviewer(s) will iterate until everyone is satisfied with the final product. The changes will be deployed to a test environment where you will verify it once again with a combination of manual and automated tests before finally marking the work ticket as "resolved".
Qualifications Basic
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science (or a related field) or one-year professional software development experience
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to work well in a team, eagerness to learn
  • Strong customer focus, ownership, urgency, and drive - we want a self-starter
  • Proficient in cross-platform testing of front-end code for supported browsers and devices
  • Proficient in front-end JavaScript
  • Proficient in server-side JavaScript, specifically Node.js and NPM
  • Proficient in HTML5 and CSS3
  • Familiar with Unix command line basics
Preferred
  • Production experience with Node.js
  • Production experience with ECMAScript 2015+
  • Production experience with Angular, React, or Vue
  • Production experience with NoSQL basic operations (CouchDB preferred)
  • Unix shell scripting (e.g. Bash)
  • Container-based virtualization with Docker Compose or Kubernetes

As part of its continued efforts to maintain a safe workplace for employees, Hearst Newspapers requires that all employees who receive a written offer of employment be fully vaccinated (as defined by the CDC) against the coronavirus by the first day of employment as a condition of employment, to the extent permitted by applicable law. Hearst Newspapers will consider requests for reasonable accommodations on an individual basis in accordance with applicable legal requirements.
