The Legal Team within the General Counsel's Organization (GCO) at American Express is seeking highly motivated, talented, and curious Managers & Counsel to join our team. Our team consists of Business Legal Groups (providing Legal counsel to our individual business units), Enterprise Legal Groups (providing Antitrust, Intellectual Property, and Technology counsel across our business units), Employment Law, Litigation, International, Corporate Securities, Mergers & Acquisitions, and Regulatory Banking & Insurance.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Delivering or assisting in the delivery of legal support in connection with a wide range of 'core' or 'business as usual' legal needs for a market, client group or specialized practice area.
  • Implementing and helping improve standard GCO operating procedures and support methodologies.
  • Project managing GCO initiatives and tasks.
  • Representing GCO at specific meetings or committees (e.g. new product development, marketing review).
  • Partnering with and supporting more senior GCO attorneys on specific projects and initiatives, acting as delegate if needed.

The successful candidate will be:

  • A strong commercial attorney with superior communication and influencing skills as well as teamwork and relationship building skills.
  • Experienced in one or multiple of our core competencies: Legal analysis and reasoning, research and investigation, negotiation, contract drafting and legal writing, contract interpretation and advising, project management and organization, business acumen, and legal and regulatory knowledge.
  • Highly collaborative, with excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Able to set direction and build consensus in the face of ambiguity.
  • A strategic problem-solver with a good business understanding, analytical skills, a rapid grasp of key issues, and a pragmatic approach.
  • Proactive and open to new ideas.
  • Someone with unwavering integrity and strong judgment in line with American Express values.
  • Able to communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively, in both written and oral format.
  • Agile and able to pivot appropriately when challenged with new information or evolving circumstances.
  • Excellent at issue spotting and possess pragmatic problem solving skills.

Minimum Qualifications and Preferred Attributes/Areas of Expertise:

  • J.D. with eligibility to practice law in New York, Florida, or Arizona.
  • 3+ years of relevant legal experience, preferably at a corporate law firm or in-house at a financial services institution or in the payments industry.
  • Deep knowledge of the legal field and its intersection with business, specifically:

    • Knowledge of US consumer and/or commercial finance regulations, including but not limited to Reg Z (TILA), Reg P (GLBA), Reg V(FCRA), Reg X (RESPA), Reg B (ECOA), Reg E (EFTA), Ref F (FDCPA), Reg D, eSign, MLA and/or SCRA, or
    • Knowledge of US network rules and merchant acquiring, or
    • Knowledge of advertising laws, including FTC guidelines, state UDAP laws, and CFPB UDAAP principles.
  • Experience in financial services and payments.
  • Experience advising clients on a range of matters, including marketing and acquisition, customer communications, multi-channel user experiences, and new product development (including user experience and enrollment processes).

Salary Range: $110,000.00 to $190,000.00 annually + bonus + benefits
