Amex Ventures (amexventures.com) is American Express' corporate venture capital arm. The team invests in early-stage startups to accelerate enterprise efforts in consumer, B2B, and enterprise capabilities. Since 2011, Amex Ventures has invested in over 90 companies and realized almost 30 exits. The portfolio has a carrying value of $1.3B, and 70% of investments have a commercial relationship with American Express.

The newly formed BD Team is responsible for building and maintaining several ecosystem relationships to create new and expanded sourcing and partnership channels for Amex Ventures. The team will be front and center of efforts to amplify the brand and mission of Amex Ventures and developing partnerships that will help us ensure that we are strengthening our sourcing efforts to bring in startups led by founders that full reflect the diversity of the customers and communities we serve. In addition, the BD team will work closely with the investor team to support the development of new and expanded commercial relationships between Amex Business Units and portfolio companies.

Someone passionate about building relationships, growing partnerships and activating new business activities.

Roles and Responsibilities will include:

  • Driving forward BD activities with the external start up and VC ecosystem across a number of ecosystem players including (but not limited to) VCs, Accelerators, Universities and Nonprofits
  • Assessing multiple business strategies and building strong internal relationships to execute on new and expanded commercial relationships between Amex Business Units and start ups
  • Strategy development, in collaboration with Amex Ventures leadership, to engage the ecosystem and deliver measurable return for Amex Ventures and American Express
  • Partner management of the Amex Ventures partner ecosystem to ensure both sides obtain value and the partnerships are delivering returns on investments
  • Utilize data and insights to provide thought leadership on repeatable and scalable recommendations for future partnership development
  • Represent Amex Ventures at VC/start up events with the ability to generate excitement about the Amex Ventures mission, vision, key investment thesis areas and key priorities
  • Community building activities to enable deeper engagement with the ecosystem across events, conferences and other initiatives
  • Collaboration across Legal, Marketing, Risk, PR and Business teams to support partnership activities

Minimum qualifications

  • Passionate about the American Express brand, the business model, and opportunities for innovation through access to the start up ecosystem
  • Energized to join the start of the journey to build something new and impactful within Amex Ventures and the broader VC/start up ecosystem
  • Previous experience:
    • developing and implementing business development or go to market strategies
    • leading cross functional relationships, especially across large, complex environments
  • Demonstrate curiosity, effective collaboration, and the ability to develop creative solutions to solve difficult challenges
  • Ability to successfully leverage partnerships to achieve strong business results
  • Experience launching engaging community building initiatives (e.g., events) that drive business results
  • 3+ years of business development or partnerships experience
  • Ideally based in NYC or San Francisco with a willingness to travel
  • Existing VC or start up network is a plus

Salary Range: $100,000.00 to $170,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
