USAID Burundi is planning to launch Itongo Ryanje, Itunga Ryanje, a new activity. The Itongo Ryanje, Itunga Ryanje Activity in Burundi aims to address critical challenges faced by women in the agriculture sector, particularly in accessing land, increasing productivity, and adapting to climate change. By empowering women in agriculture value chains, the project seeks to enhance their economic and social standing, ability to influence their families and communities, and strengthen resilience to climate impacts. The activity will be implemented in close coordination with a variety of local actors, including the private sector, other project implementers, and the Government of Burundi (GOB), to strengthen women participation in market-driven enterprises and build their entrepreneurial, leadership and management skills to achieve greater economic independence.
Position Description
The Gender and Social Inclusion Advisor will provide technical expertise on gender and social inclusion, including direct technical support to the refinement of the intervention (approach and materials, including curriculum), policy advocacy, and policy and intervention development. This person will be responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, and evaluation of activities to define a gendered approach to address systemic barriers and empower women and marginalized groups, including widows, single mothers, and those with limited access to resources outcomes. Specific areas of focus include access to land and socio-economic empowerment in the agriculture sector and green economy. The Gender and Social Inclusion Advisor will work with project team to ensure that gender is incorporated into all training programs. The Gender and Social Inclusion Advisor will play a key role in building technical capacity of government and partners, as well as project staff.Â
Qualifications
Education:
Master’s Degree (or a Bachelor’s degree with relevant experience) in gender/women’s studies, social science, international development, education, or similar relevant field required.
Skills and Experience:
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in analyzing gender issues;
- Experience in conducting gender assessments and social inclusion work.
- Proven ability to apply gender-sensitive and gender-transformative approaches to issues on development programs looking at access to land and socio-economic empowerment of women in the agriculture sector and/or green economy;
- Demonstrated ability to work with host government and partners in implementing a complex project in the field under challenging circumstances;
- Significant knowledge of gender principles as they relate to access to rights and women economic empowerment programs is highly preferred;
- Experience in gender-based programming with substantial understanding of and commitment to equality and equity issues and mainstreaming;
- Experience working on similar USAID or other donor-funded programs; familiarity with USAID regulations and policies preferred;
- Experience with technical and/or operational issues related to a mix of women’s empowerment and leadership, and community engagement is preferred;
- Experience providing sound recommendations on strategies and tools to integrate gender in project design and implementation;
- Knowledge of international best practices on gender programing, project design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, as well as excellent interpersonal, writing and presentation skills.
Language:
Fluency in French and English is required.
