We are recruiting for this contract role on behalf of Hines, a global real estate client, with an online platform and a marketplace for premium, work ready offices. Candidates located in the New York, Houston, Los Angeles, or London areas are in the preferred region. We are seeking a Director level executive with a strong track record of business leadership, strategic sales, operational, and management skills, in both corporate and startup environments.

In partnership with Hines, we’re looking to further develop and scale a new carbon-solution within the commercial real-estate domain. The current founding team has developed a strong hypothesis on a disruptive technology based value proposition, with the objective to speed up the decarbonization of the built environment. The team is looking for a General Manager of the New Venture, to lead and support the team going through the validation testing phase. From there, the venture General Manager will focus and be accountable for the overall business, establishing priorities and driving progress, managing individuals and filling the key hires. They will also oversee product and go-to-market efforts with the respective leaders, signing early customers, and reporting progress to and fundraising with the Venture Board.

The venture will operate independently under the umbrella of the Hines Venture Lab, and will manage the relationship with the Venture Board, office of Innovation, and other stakeholders in the parent company.

This is a 12-month contract position, with an opportunity to convert to full-time.

The Role                                         

  • Lead individuals in the venture, coach and manage performance, assign ownership and accountability, identify gaps in skills and lead hiring.
  • Help leverage the competitive advantages and key assets of the sponsor company, and key partners, to further the business objectives of the venture
  • Continue to built on the drafted operating plan, to validate and de risk the key assumptions from the incubation efforts, and confirm findings
  • Work towards the first Minimal Viable Product, form key partnerships and sign first pilot customers
  • Empower Product and Go-To-Market efforts as the team iterates and works to perfect the product-market-fit.
  • Built a business plan for the 6-24mo business horizon and work with the Venture Board on
  • Spearhead strategic sales, form key partnerships and help bring first paying customers on the platform.
  • Manage relationships between the venture, its New Venture Board and other stakeholders within the sponsor company
  • Partner with relevant groups within the client company, manage components of the company and stakeholder engagement            

Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in a relevant subject
  • Experience with, and passion for, Energy, Decarbonization, and Sustainability
  • 10+ years of work experience with a demonstrated track record in, corporate, start-up and/or early-stage companies
  • Knowledge in the areas of ESG, ideally specifically in the area of carbon and or commercial real-estate.
  • Experience managing leaders and leading teams, performance management, hiring, and firing
  • An understanding of partnership and investments, and M&A
  • Ability to lead distributed, remote teams – The team works currently remotely, occasionally meeting in Houston or New York offices, and where the customers are.
  • Experience communicating business plans to boards or fundraising from VCs
  • Ability to manage complex stakeholder environments in a consensus-driven culture
  • Ability to collaborate well with all levels in the organization and the sponsoring company
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity in a fast-paced, fluid environment
  • Self-starter with an ability to spread energy and enthusiasm across the team
  • Ability and desire to work successfully within small, unstructured teams
  • A willingness to do what it takes to make ventures successful – there is no job too big or too small
