This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Geologist to join the Earth & Environment Team in the Atlanta, Georgia office. In this role you will manage environmental projects that involve field studies, report preparation, budget management, and interaction with coworkers, clients, subcontractors, and regulators. Projects will include groundwater, surface water, soil, and air sampling; environmental site assessments; regulatory permitting; subsurface site characterizations involving drilling, soil classification, and bedrock mapping; and hazardous waste site characterization and remediation. Position requires travel and fieldwork. The successful candidate should enjoy identifying new business opportunities and building successful client relationships.

Your Impact
  • Participating in a wide range of environmental and engineering projects, from conceptual site model development, to design and implementation of remediation and risk management strategies.
  • Support the Site Assessment and Remediation business unit by:
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of site investigation plans to identify and delineate chemicals of concern in soil, sediment, groundwater, and vapor for domestic and international clients;
  • Managaging and/or conducting field exercises including drilling, geologic logging, well installation, sampling of various media, and hydrogeologic testing.
  • Generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems and field/work site notebook.
  • Developing conceptual site models to refine the understanding of site hydrogeology, contaminant plume geometry, chemical fate and transport, and risk;
  • Supporting feasibility studies to identify appropriate remedial strategies;
  • Supporting designs for bench-scale testing, pilot study programs, and full-scale remediation strategies;
  • Support preparation of cost estimates and forecasts, including capital and operational expenditures;
  • Lead and/or support preparation of technical documentation; and,
  • Working with an internal team, the client, and external stakeholders to develop site closure strategies in accordance with domestic or international regulations.
  • Support the preparation of design drawings, technical reports, regulatory permit documents, tender documents, and technical specifications.
  • Undertaking project-based travel and site work, both within the USA and internationally. The frequency and duration of this will depend on business and client needs.
  • Providing technical support of environmental projects or environmental-related tasks in large multi-disciplinary projects including work breakdown, providing direction to junior consulting and technical staff, and making decisions with input from senior staff. Acts as the main communication link between senior and junior staff.
  • Supporting report preparation, able to prepare or direct completion of technical documents including descriptions of investigations, results, conclusions, and recommendations for review by senior staff.
  • Participating in Business Development (BD) activities including preparing or providing input to proposals, participating in trade shows and conferences.
  • Displaying a 'safety first' attitude, promoting positive health and safety, raising safety issues through the appropriate channels, and adhering to Company health and safety policy and procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, or closely related discipline.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience working as a Geologist.
  • Environmental project experience, including project management, proposal writing, client contact, and regulatory interaction.
  • Experience with both traditional and high-resolution site characterization methods and sampling techniques.
  • Basic understanding of hydrogeologic principals, contaminant fate and transport (including non-aqueous phase liquids), geochemistry, and in-situ / ex-situ remediation technologies.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions with input and review from senior staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (in English) with experience writing technical reports and project proposals.
  • Strong organizational skills with project management capabilities.
  • Confident in managing professional relationships including liaison with clients.
  • Willingness to travel based on project-specific requirements.
  • 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER health and safety training
  • Positive approach to working as a mentor and in a team environment.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • This role is subject to a client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policy. As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests. A copy of this policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.
  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP's Motor Vehicle screening.
  • Must be able to pass a HAZWOPER physical and be medically able to wear a tight-fitting respirator.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree is preferred.
  • Professional Geologist (PG) registration or the ability to obtain within a year.
  • Proficient with software such as AutoCAD, ArcGIS, and EQUiS.
  • Experience with groundwater and plume modeling software, such as MODFLOW, MODPATH, and/or MT3DMS, and associated interface/processing packages, such as Groundwater Vistas.
  • Experience with visualization software such as Leapfrog and/or Earth Volumetric Studio (EVS).
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired. #LI-SV1
