Job Description
The Transmission team is looking for individuals passionate about renewable energy with a keen interest in contributing to this industry and helping Apex accelerate the shift to clean energy. Our team is seeking a Grid Integration Summer Associate to provide electrical engineering and project coordination support in managing the portfolio of interconnection requests for the grid integration and operation of utility-scale renewable energy and storage projects across the US footprint.
Reporting to the Senior Director of Transmission & Interconnection, and working closely with Interconnection Managers, this role will directly support the execution of Apex’s renewable energy projects from a grid integration standpoint.
The ideal candidate displays strong quantitative and project management skills and is motivated by working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Preference will be given to candidates that have a sound understanding of power system fundamentals along with some knowledge of electricity markets in the US.
Responsibilities
- Utilize background in electrical engineering to submit new interconnection requests (wind, solar, storage, hybrid) in different regional markets
- Support the Interconnection Managers in overseeing technical project details and help coordinate with subject matter experts internal and external to Apex on tasks related to grid integration
- On a project specific or regional level, coordinate with grid operators and utilities on design, schedule, and costs that impact overall project attributes
- Coordinate with other Apex departments on interconnection related matters and accurately communicate timelines and anticipated costs
- Create or improve existing technical and project management tools to aid in more efficient management of the interconnection project portfolio
- Review results of power system/grid studies for renewable energy projects
- Assess the technical and commercial feasibility for interconnection of third-party projects that Apex acquires or provides diligence for
- Provide ad-hoc support in managing our current portfolio of projects from an interconnection standpoint and perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (master’s degree preferred)
- Basic understanding of the North American electric utility industry. Knowledge of interconnection rules and requirements in one or more markets is a plus
- Relevant coursework in electrical system design and power system fundamentals
- Experience creating single-line diagrams with a basic understanding of dynamic and load flow power system models
- Proven ability to be a creative thinker with excellent time-management skills
- Ability to communicate effectively in both commercial and technical venues on a stand-alone basis
- Expected graduation date in December 2024 or May 2025
Additional Information
- The summer associate program will run from June 3 through August 9 but we can be flexible with the start and end dates
- Hours: Full TimeÂ
- Type: Non-Exempt
- Paid Internship: Undergraduate, $17/Hour; Graduate, $27/Hour
