The Grounds Team Lead position leads a team of groundskeepers which perform grounds maintenance at the O.C. Tanner Campus. The role is to keep the location beautiful throughout the year, including turf maintenance, plant and tree knowledge, and irrigation.

This position will assist the Director of Facilities in personnel decisions, operational oversight, and other areas as needed. Directs the work of full-time and part-time staff. This is a working team lead position.

Must be able to perform a variety of grounds maintenance duties include monitoring the watering of turf areas, flowers, and shrubs. Planting of grass, flowers, shrubs, and trees, weeding flower and shrub beds, prune shrubs and trees, litter removal, and general equipment maintenance.

The Grounds Team Lead has a regular schedule but requires flexibility and must be available to work on-call for snow removal, sprinkler system emergencies, or any other emergencies that may arise. Position will be required to work under various conditions that can be severe. Weather conditions ranging from extreme heat and cold, to rain and snow.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Maintain all grounds and equipment (i.e., mowing, edging, trimming, and aerating).
  • Maintain irrigation systems for proper operation including installation, maintenance, repair, programming, troubleshooting.
  • Supervise oversight of employee's work, making assignments, performance management, time clock approval.
  • Oversee areas of employee relations and/ or performance issues within the grounds staff.
  • Fertilizing, applying herbicides/pesticides to grass, flowers, and shrubs as required.
  • Transplanting/planting sod, flowers, shrubs, and trees, weeding flower and shrub beds, pruning shrubs and trees, weeding, and removing litter.
  • General equipment maintenance.
  • Remove snow and ice on property as needed. Areas include parking lots, sidewalks, handicap ramps, and roadways.
  • Apply ice melt in designated locations as needed.
  • Operate and maintain equipment associated with snow removal job duties.
  • Perform sprinkler emergency repair work as needed.
  • Open, complete, and close out work orders in Infor.
  • Approve time worked of grounds team
  • Order all items required for the grounds department
  • Be able use corporate P-Card and assure all purchases are accounted for and balanced monthly in company accounting system.
  • Must be able to lift more the 50lbs and be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Supervisory and team management skills including the ability to effectively assist in the hiring/termination process.
  • Conduct winterization on all irrigation systems.

Job Requirements

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • 1-3 years' experience managing crew members.
  • Plant identification and care knowledge.
  • Must possess a valid Utah driver's license and good driving record
  • Herbicide and pesticide application licenses required within six (6) months.
  • Must be available to work on call for snow removal and sprinkler system emergencies
  • Demonstrate effective teamwork with all staff.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use turf maintenance equipment (i.e., driving mower, hand mowers, edgers, leaf blowers, weed eaters, and line trimmers, etc.).
  • Ability to safely operate tractors, backhoes, forklifts, snowplows, and other equipment. Equipment maintenance skills to include the following: proper fueling procedures, cleaning equipment, and ensuring equipment is functioning properly.
  • Ability to use a sprinkler clock and start an irrigation station and program the schedule and clocks.
  • Knowledge and skill with garden preparation and design. Ability to apply proper techniques to maintain flowerbeds, shrubs and trees including planting, weeding, and pruning.
  • Knowledge of various kinds of plants and weeds and ability to identify them and train others.
  • Ability to apply aeration techniques.
  • Ability to appropriately calculate application rate for fertilizer based on soil tests, appropriately calculate application rate for herbicide in turf and properly apply to turf, and appropriately calculate application rate for pesticide as needed.
  • Knowledge of flowers, shrubs and trees. Assist and advise other department personnel on plant choices and purchases.
  • Snow removal skills and ability involving motorized equipment and snow shovels.
  • Basic computer program knowledge. Ability to navigate the Internet.
  • Knowledge work order systems, opening and closing work orders, completing work orders, as well as ordering materials as needed.
  • Ensure that subordinates complete their assigned tasks on time and according to best practice.
  • Ability to use the timecard system to approve time as needed.
  • Receive and follow verbal/written instructions.
  • Ability to read and understand MSDS labeling requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Co-Worker
