General Summary:
At Unum, the role of Director, Actuary provides enterprise level thinking to produce thorough actuarial and financial analysis for complex, multifaceted problems. This is a senior level position that requires independent judgement and solid business knowledge. In this role, you will leverage technical acumen, develop and maintain strong financial expertise to build a framework upon which to make strategic decisions, and champion innovation and efficiency. You will drive, directly and through others, enhancements to the valuation process and analytics while remaining focused on the completeness and accuracy of our financial statements.
As a thought leader and a risk manager, the Director, Actuary is looked to try new approaches and push forward with bold decisions while remaining disciplined. They not only understand the inner workings of the task at hand, but they also understand the overall business objective and/or challenge. A strong performer at this level consistently gains buy-in, is convincing, and builds followership across the enterprise and with external partners. They create, foster, and protect an environment of inclusivity; and they ensure that opportunities are made available for all team members.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide oversight to various group valuation processes including monthly close, reserve adequacy and cash flow testing
- Provide oversight to the development of valuation experience analysis. Develop and improve on existing tools and processes
- Prepare and communicate analysis of financial results, reserve changes and experience trends to senior leadership
- Develop new analytics and visualization tools to enhance Group Valuations capabilities and create efficiencies
- Develop quality analytics, on an ongoing basis, to provide insight into the financial drivers of the business, including gain/loss analysis
- Partner on modernization efforts across valuation teams to increase efficiency of processes
- Ensure valuation processes comply with actuarial governance principles, controls, and external/regulatory requirements
- Mentor, manage and train an actuarial support staff
- May perform other duties as assigned
Job Specifications
- Bachelors degree required
- Fellow of the Society of Actuaries
- At least four years of relevant experience and/or a high level of technical expertise
- Proficiency in actuarial tools and processes; familiarity with SQL, Prophet, and Alteryx preferred
- Strong financial analysis skills including financial statement analysis
- Demonstrated ability to identify problems and think independently about appropriate solutions
- Strong and effective organizational skills; ability to work under time constraints and drive multiple projects
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
