Job Description

About Gusto

Gusto is a modern, online people platform that helps small businesses take care of their teams. On top of full-service payroll, Gusto offers health insurance, 401(k)s, expert HR, and team management tools. Today, Gusto offices in Denver, San Francisco, and New York serve more than 200,000 businesses nationwide.

Our mission is to create a world where work empowers a better life, and it starts right here at Gusto. That’s why we’re committed to building a collaborative and inclusive workplace, both physically and virtually. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy.

As our Head of Benefits, you will own our full benefits strategy and roll-up your sleeves to execute the vision. You are the face and magic of benefits for Gusties. By actively collaborating with our broader People Team and leadership team, you'll bring to life a long-lasting employee benefits program that will help us attract and retain talent in today's competitive landscape. Your work and leadership will help make Gusto a fulfilling place to work where Gusties can grow and do the best work of their lives.

This role sits within the Total Rewards team. We’re the engine behind many of our people programs, the thread that helps keep us humming and thriving. We strive to work cross-functionally to deliver programs that both delight and scale. We’re not afraid to roll-up our sleeves and have fun while we’re doing so. We live to serve, and we do it in style.

The position is full-time and based in either San Francisco or Denver.

What it is like to Work with Gusto

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Create a global benefits strategy aligned with Gusto’s values and mission: By working alongside your People team and functional leaders, you'll have the creative freedom to elevate our existing benefits and design a customized and scalable benefits strategy that anchors around our company values.
  • Being the benefits side first point of contact for our people team, leaders, and vendors: You'll leverage your experience in benefits design, broker management, and stakeholder management and help resolve issues by working with our numerous partners and vendors. Over time, you'll adapt our resources and benefits education strategy to provide our employees with the information they need when they need it.
  • Managing organizational change: You'll jump right in, assess our existing program, and build a roadmap for how we take our benefits from where they are today to the next stage globally. From thinking through the communication plan across multiple office locations to building intentional wellness initiatives, your focus will not only be on what we launch but also how we land it.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in due diligence of acquisitions, and manage post acquisition integration
  • Lead, work alongside, and develop a team of subject matter experts within the benefits COE
  • Executing benefits initiatives: you will own day-to-day execution of the benefits function and team, ensuring our benefit programs are operating efficiently and delivering value to our employees.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • At least 10+ years of benefits experience in a fast-paced environment
  • Adapted and evolved benefits operations and/or strategy, ideally through multiple phases of company growth
  • Ability to strike a balance between strategic vision-building and rolling up your sleeves
  • A deep sense of empathy and understanding for the needs of diverse groups of people
  • Comfort with interpreting and using people data to tell a story and translating it into actionable strategy
  • Adept at building and nurturing trusting relationships both internally and externally at all levels
  • Bonus points: Benefits Licensure (not needed for the day-to-day role but indicative of a strong grasp on the benefits landscape)

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $133,000 - $164,000/year in Denver, and $156,000 - $193,000 for San Francisco. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home with us.
