Job Description
The Head of CEO Communications is an exceptional opportunity for a communications strategist to lead external and internal communications for the Office of the Chief Executive Officer. If you are a big thinker and passionate writer who wants to positively impact the world this might be your dream job. The ideal candidate is a versatile media strategist, creator of compelling, thought-leading content who enjoys partnering with a senior leader to create a communications platform and amplify the message.
On a typical day, you might scan through the latest headlines in genomics, come up with some candidate tweets, and interview one of our senior R&D team so you can put the finishing touches on a keynote speech. No two days are exactly the same but broadly you will be working with the CEO and key subject matter experts to brainstorm, craft, and deliver thoughtful, compelling scripts for keynote presentations, social media, video content, and written communication. This senior communications leadership role will combine a deep understanding of current events and Illumina business priorities with disciplined execution and meticulous attention to detail to drive measurable results.

Key Responsibilities:
- Establish communication strategy and message map, ensuring buy-in from key stakeholders. Formalize content strategy and syndication of messages across channels
- Craft compelling content on behalf of the CEO, translating our compelling mission and purpose into meaningful stories and developing powerful messaging that drives Illumina's corporate positioning and brand
- Establish engaging internal (employee) communication strategies for the CEO to drive connection to our people and in turn, them to our mission and impact
- Write speeches and talking points for external events and public engagements
- Draft concise yet thorough briefing materials used to prepare the CEO for engagements
- Stay up to date on current events that may be relevant to CEO communications and build a solid network of subject matter experts to provide background, opinions, and clarification
- Partner with the Social Media team to maintain CEO's social media presence, ensuring real-time response as required by current events or problematic activity
- Partner with Public Relations team to identify external speaking engagements that support core messaging platform, in partnership with communications teams and drive a sustained CEO media program
- Implement processes that drive long-term planning, high-quality content gathering, and rigorous execution across all aspects of CEO communications
- Develop specific metrics and adjust strategy and tactics over time based on results
- Manage external agencies and freelancers as needed to deliver on CEO communications plan
- Ensure that CEO communications deliverables stay on track and deliver results, manage reviews, overall cadence, and regular metrics reporting
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with flawless application of grammar and AP style
- Ability to develop relationships at all levels of an organization and across functions with a collaborative work style but a bias for action
- Knowledge of genetics and/or biology preferred
- Project management skills with strong ability to manage details for precision and accuracy
- High ethical standards, able to manage very confidential information
- Curious and willing to learn, but also driven to excel and deliver results
- Strong research capabilities with resourcefulness in gathering information from various sources
- Fluency in multi and social media - video production, digital communications
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Qualifications
- Minimum education required: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Science, Engineering or related field required
- Background in healthcare, life sciences, biology or genetics or equivalent knowledge strongly preferred
- 5+ years of relevant experience working with senior executives or public figures
