Job Description
Hungryroot is the all-in-one recipe and grocery service. We're here to help people feel their best and make grocery shopping, cooking, and enjoying healthy food easier than ever. So, we're creating the first-of-its-kind food experience that puts people (and the planet) first, built for busy lives and individual needs.
We are a distributed team built on top talent from across the U.S. While we have an office in NYC, we support employees creating “offices” wherever they are. We believe in fostering team connection and collaboration across all of our “offices” - so don’t expect to be online at 6 am to make a meeting if you’re on the West coast. Expect to attend regular team building events, and to be able to work from the beach every once in a while. Expect to be treated like an owner who cares about our common goal, not someone who has to clock in and out of work.
What You’ll DoHungryroot is looking for a Head of Data Science to join our growing Digital team. This individual will need to guide and oversee the data science, data engineering, and operations research teams (total team of ~10 today), personally contributing code and designing architectural flows. This is a hands-on role: expect to be writing code 50% of the time.
AI is driving 70% of Hungryroot revenue today. This role is pivotal in growing the impact our AI systems have, both through hands-on code work and technical leadership. From working with the Product and UX teams on collecting more and better data from our consumers, to designing data pipelines to munge the data, to developing machine learning systems that make inferences from that data, this role is crucial to Hungryroot’s success.
This position will report directly to the Chief Digital Officer and will focus on leveraging data science to drive business impact for Hungryroot. This role will serve as a valued cross-functional contributor, comfortable speaking to a range of stakeholders, from deeply technical individual contributors to the executive team

- Recommender systems - pair up customers & products
- Mathematical optimization / operations research (OR) responsibilities:

- Lead and build machine learning models through all phases of development from design, testing, data gathering, training, evaluation, validation, governance, and implementation.
- Build and maintain the health of data engineering and AI systems, including speed, model accuracy, reliability, and performance.
- Measure outcomes and translate analytics insights into recommendations that are clearly linked to the organization's strategy and goals.
- Deep hands-on experience in machine learning, relational databases, and open source programming languages (Python, Scala) for large scale data analysis systems (Spark, Databricks).
- Experience in developing advanced data science and machine learning infrastructure and systems.
- Strong knowledge of data science technologies and machine learning concepts and have
