General Summary:

The Unum Decision Technologies (UDT) team is at the forefront of transforming Unum into a data driven company. We are searching for forward thinking individuals who are able convert issues into opportunities using data, statistics, and reason to present impactful findings that help our company thrive. In this role you will partner closely with business leaders in researching a wide range of topics, with your teammates to construct statistical insights and models, and with ML/AI engineers to build and implement solutions. As a leader of analytics within Unum, you will be instrumental in transforming Unum from a traditional insurance player to a leading data first digital insurance company; influencing senior executives around strategies and investments. Come build a world class team of data scientists with cross- discipline partnerships with other functional areas across Finance, Marketing, and Operations.

You will partner closely with Unum business leaders, IT Delivery, Transformation leadership, and Unum IT architecture to lead the development of data insights. This role will have direct management responsibilities for a team of highly technical Data Scientists along with other IT specialist positions. In addition to the direct management responsibilities of US staff, you will also lead cross-country analytics resources and 3rd party vendor resources.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Provides strategic direction, guidance, and recommendations around AI
• Influences senior executives and business leaders around strategies and investments
• Lead and manage team of Data Science and Information Technology professionals working within agile/infrastructure or operations teams, working across a wide range of environments, supporting the analysis, development, design, creation, modification and testing of Unum data analytics and machine learning software and related applications
• Ensure strong, diverse talent and leadership pipeline in place to meet aggressive business goals. Develops, coaches and engages people to higher levels of performance.
• Lead cross-functional, cross-disciplinary teams
• Develops influential relationships with internal and external partners and vendors that are part of the Advanced analytics ecosystem
• Understands and is an advocate of following architecture standards, practices and processes.
• Lead initiatives focused on iterating, exploring, and prototyping new statistical analysis to change the way we approach business problems

• Build, lead, develop, mentor and coach a high performing, empowered staff of business and IT professionals across various locations while also promoting a culture based on our guiding principles of customer, agility and empowerment.
• Effectively manage operating expenses within the established budget
• Leverages external partners effectively in all aspects of IT, from strategy through delivery. Able to manage complex vendor relationships and hold vendors accountable for results.
• Ensure the security and protection of data, information systems and equipment; actively implements security, privacy, risk management and disaster recovery initiatives and best practices.
• Takes bold actions and is a change leader. Advocates for change with confidence; takes ownership and personal responsibility for implementing change, and leverages communications, goals, resources, and metrics to ensure broader understanding and accountability.
• Effectively communicate upward and across business and technology teams; builds strong partnerships with senior leaders and IT stakeholders, both internal and external.

Job Specifications

• Background in CS-Math /Data Science/ Operational research
• Strategic innovator with demonstrated experience of pushing the boundaries and reimagining the art of possible
• Solid execution experience of taking ideas to scale
• Experience bridging the divide between the theoretical and the applied. Proven expertise in communicating that vision and experience to non-technical stakeholders.
• Exhibits courage by taking smart risks and encourages others to do so; empowers innovative approaches by motivating others to be proactive and resourceful.
• Understanding of Agile/Lean leadership principles
• Ability to apply broad business understanding of internal and external trends and financial considerations to leverage business process and technology opportunities, meet evolving customer needs, and ensure successful implementation of area plans.
• Demonstrated depth of IT knowledge with diversity in technical experience. Is seen as a credible technology partner.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$155,400.00-$303,000.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including performance-based incentives, healthcare benefits, insurance benefits, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual plans.
