Job Description
Coast is re-imagining the trillion-dollar U.S. B2B card payments infrastructure, with a focus on the country’s 500,000 commercial fleets, 40 million commercial vehicles, and many million commercial drivers. The incumbent technologies that cater to these customers are decades old, and drivers and fleets increasingly demand modern digital experiences and affordable and transparent financial services products. Coast's mission is to deliver them at a transformational scale, beginning with the Coast Fleet and Fuel Card built on a cutting-edge spend management platform.
The Head of Finance will report to the CEO and join as a member of management, to own Coast’s efforts around financial planning, reporting, pricing, funding, and analysis. You will work closely with Risk, Product, Marketing, Sales, department leaders, and the company's management team to understand and shape Coast’s financial future. Your goal will be to increase the fidelity and precision of our view towards profitability and scale, and ensure that the company executes on that plan and manages the cash needed to do so. You will, over time, build a cross-functional team of professionals in analytics, accounting and control, financial planning, and capital markets. In the process, you will build a world-class finance function that accounts for and manages risk. This is a very hands-on role, and you will be expected to roll up your sleeves and do the work of FP&A, control, financial operations, and much more, with very little additional help or resources, particularly in the early days.
The ideal candidate for this role can function as an adaptable generalist and also play an important role in managing both enabling partnerships (such as those with the card network, issuing bank, and payments processor) as well as strategic distribution and co-brand relationships.
Things you’ll do:
- Oversee, build, and maintain Coast’s detailed financial model, accounting for all inputs into revenue, expenses, and cash usage, to improve Coast’s forecasting accuracy
- Communicate Coast’s financial vision to all stakeholders, including its board of directors as well as current and future debt and equity investors
- Create and execute a strategy for Coast’s funding and capital structure, including overseeing a capital markets function that will source various forms of debt capital to finance Coast’s credit business
- Create guidelines for Coast’s product pricing in line with our financial vision, and gain insight into profitability on a per-client level
- Work with Coast’s Controller and Head of Financial Operations to execute the day-to-day operations of Coast’s payments processing business
- Build and grow relationships with key partners such as banks, payments processors, and card networks
- Structure and negotiate distribution partnership commercial terms
- Implement and oversee a regular and disciplined company-wide budgeting process
- Refine Coast’s processes around accounting and control, to reduce operational risk and to provide fast and accurate views into Coast’s financial position and clean audit opinions
- Generally, be the go-to person for all things finance at Coast
You have:
- A background in corporate finance
- An enormous appetite for detail and precision, and a willingness to roll up your sleeves and do the dirty work
- Strong modeling and quantitative communications skills
- A track record of creating and executing on a sustainable financial strategy
- A self-starting attitude: You work independently and effectively, with little oversight or management
- Exceptional project management abilities - you are known for getting things done
- Experience with capital markets and managing complex capital structures (preferred)
- Background in the finances of financial services and payments/credit/lending companies (preferred)
- Experience in growing venture-backed startups (preferred)
- A history as a strong manager and leader of people (preferred)
Critically, you must be practical and business-minded, smart and creative, and excited about the rewards and volatility of an early-stage venture-backed startup.
