Job Description Summary:
PayPal is seeking a Senior Portfolio Manager for impact investing to manage PayPal’s Economic Opportunity Fund, gender equality investments, and overall impact investment strategy within PayPal’s corporate treasury. This individual will manage all current and future treasury investing activity across PayPal’s impact investing portfolio comprised of corporate cash deposit investments in mission-driven financial institutions, managed funds, and investment partnerships. In addition, this individual will take responsibility for developing and implementing the policies and procedures used to manage PayPal’s impact investment strategy and investable assets more broadly from a responsible environmental, social, and governance (ESG) perspective.Job Description:
This individual will work closely with PayPal’s Global Social Innovation Team in their efforts to develop a market leading social impact measurement approach and capabilities to describe, measure, report, and enhance our impact. This role will manage the impact measurement and evaluation of PayPal’s impact investments. This is an exciting and ambitious opportunity to support PayPal in ensuring accountability to its mission and values as it relates to social and environmental impact across the Treasury and Investments teams.
Specific duties of this role will include:
Transactions:
Source, structure, execute, and manage impact investment opportunities for PayPal across initial impact areas of racial equity and gender equality as well as potential future focus areas including climate resilience.
Portfolio Underwriting / Risk Management:
Conduct industry, investment, and credit / fund due diligence to support investment and risk management decision-making
Analyze individual banks, mission-driven financial institutions, and limited partnership vehicles to evaluate credit risks and make relative value judgements
Perform ongoing monitoring of the investment portfolio including risk reporting and investment memorandums
Ensure compliance with investment policy, corporate governance, and applicable regulatory standards
Impact Measurement:
Measure and evaluate impact utilizing statistical analysis, impact metrics, and collaborate with the Global Social Innovation team to develop other rigorous evaluation strategies that are sufficiently flexible to capture the full range of positive impact resulting from investments
Develop portfolio dashboard and oversee impact management, reporting, and disclosure throughout the investment process
Evaluate and analyze third-party providers of ESG ratings / scores
Collaborate with communications and investor relations teams to translate and communicate investment outcomes and impact
Strategy and Stakeholder Engagement
Develop and refine policies and procedures used to manage PayPal’s impact investment strategy and to apply a responsible environmental, social, and governance (ESG) perspective to investable assets more broadly
Develop and maintain strong relationships with securities dealers, asset managers, local CDCs, CDFIs, and foundations in order to source investment opportunities
Engage with various industry stakeholders, including relationships with relevant impact investing industry groups (GIIN, ImpactAlpha, ImpactAssets, OPIM, Bloomberg Green), NGOs, etc. and periodically update relevant internal teams on the rapidly evolving impact investing landscape
Position Requirements
The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of investment evaluation, fixed income securities, and private credit transactions as well as familiarity with assets such as corporate bonds, project finance, and consumer lending but also specific experience with innovative social impact investment vehicles including green bonds, and sustainable development bonds. Additionally, the candidate will have securities analysis and investment experience with excellent communication skills, fluency in portfolio management concepts, and advanced proficiency with credit underwriting and investment due diligence.
Bachelor’s degree required, MBA/CFA preferred
7+ years experience in fixed income, private credit, and/or impact investing
Strong fundamental understanding of financial markets, investment theory, sustainability, impact investing, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues in investing
Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
Strong analytical and project management skills
