  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

Qualifications

GS-07: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Experience applying knowledge of the theories, principles, standards and applications of health physics and radiological controls. This must also include knowledge of associated disciplines such as: mathematics, statistics, physics, nuclear physics, chemistry, and biology.
  • Experience applying knowledge and understanding of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's regulations, NAVSEA policies and procedures, BUMED policies and procedures, Federal regulations, State regulations, shipyard regulations, and applicable technical manuals sufficient to adapt or extrapolate pertinent guidelines to perform in each of the functional areas.
  • Experience applying knowledge and understanding of the functions and objectives of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, Radiological Control Office, and Radiation Health Division.
  • Experience applying knowledge of the operating principles of naval nuclear reactors and reactor systems.
GS-05: Applicants who meet the Basic Requirements for this position are fully qualified for the GS-05 grade level.
Successful completion of a bachelor's degree in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described above.

When combining education, qualifying experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Experience applying knowledge of the theories, principles, standards and applications of health physics and radiological controls. This must also include knowledge of associated disciplines such as: mathematics, statistics, physics, nuclear physics, chemistry, and biology.

Education

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

(A) Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

OR

(B) Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.

There are no educational substitutions for basic requirements. Basic requirements are required for this position. However, the following are educational substitutions for specialized experience.

GS-07:
Successful completion of 1 year of graduate-level education
OR
Superior academic achievement

GS-05: No educational substitution.

Work may involve frequent, strenuous activities such as climbing vertical ladders, staging, or scaffolding in dry-docks, vessels, and outside of buildings. Lighter activities such as walking over rough or swampy terrain, lifting and carrying items up to 60 pounds, bending, reaching, stooping, and crouching are also frequent.

The incumbent performs required functions in an office, laboratory, and outdoors. The laboratory setting consists of handling radioactive material and sources which require special handling procedures and wearing protective articles of clothing. Required to work with radioactive and non-radioactive waste that contains certain chemical agents which are potentially harmful, considered hazardous material, and require special procedures for handling.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
