Health Science Officer

BASIC EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: A bachelor's or higher-level degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences, or allied sciences that is appropriate to the work of this position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Transcripts required.

In addition to the basic educational requirement, you must also meet the MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS at the GS-14 grade level: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in Federal service. Specialized experience includes: acting as the Principal Investigator for a scientific research program; utilizing rehabilitation research methodologies; developing scientific research proposals; and participating in the merit review process. This experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: The role is principally sedentary, involving reading, writing, in-person and telephone communication, computer and standard office equipment use. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, or books. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. Some travel outside the Washington, D.C. area (estimated 5 trips per year) may be necessary. The work is performed in a professional office environment while sitting at an ergonomic workstation, and is primarily in downtown, Washington, D.C. The building is accessible to public transportation linking D.C. and the entire Metro area. RR&D occupies a suite of offices adjacent to other components of ORD. The environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting, and training rooms, e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations. The work area has adequate light, heat, and ventilation.
