Summary

The primary purpose of the position is to support the clinical and administrative functions of VISN 10 CFU and Prosthetics Sensory Aids Service (PSAS). The incumbent works under supervision of the Production supervisor. The primary purpose of the position is to perform technical work in the VISN 10 CFU - and assist in the design, fabrication, repair, and modification the many varieties of orthotic devices prescribed by a physician.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/27/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-05 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-04. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

For GS-5:
  • Specialized Experience: You must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Communication and interpersonal relations, including the ability to appropriately and courteously relate to internal and external customers. Maintenance of confidentiality of patient/employee information, electronic and print; Knowledge of the mechanical function of prosthetic and sensory aids appliances. Basic knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. Ability to read and understand prescriptions and orthotic procedures to unde1take the fabricating of orthotic appliances. Knowledge of the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service mission, regulations, and policies regarding eligibility for treatment, as they are necessary to adequately determine a patient's eligibility/entitlement for equipment.
OR
Substitute Education for Experience:
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation.
OR
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-05 level. Applicants may have a combination of education and experience to qualify at this level. Experience and education as described above must equate to one year of experience. Percentage of the required education plus percentage of the required experience must equal to one hundred percent.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

GS-06 grade level: You must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized duties are, but not limited to: performing all duties involved with orthotic and prosthetic skills in the repairing, fabrication, and modification of orthotic and prosthetic devices for treatment of patients; performing a broad range of work, which involves the choice of materials, fabrication, and fitting of the orthotic and prosthetic device; and knowledge to be able to scan impression boxes and design plaster casts for fabrication of prosthetic and orthotic devices.
B: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The position demands a moderate degree of exertion and a high degree of dexterity, long periods of standing and long-distance walking from clinic to clinic may be required.Other physical demands will include but not limited to; bending, kneeling, some lifting (not to exceed 50 lbs.) and work with some power tools.
