Host Software Intern (Summer)

The Elevator Pitch

Do you thrive in getting creative and solving problems? Do you want to get real world exposure and experience to what Software Engineering is?

In this Host Software Engineering role, you will get direct hands-on experience with our Express system software. You will help Evolv to develop and come up with solutions that make our Express software better. Not only will you be working on the software end, but you will also have the opportunity to be exposed to the ins and outs of the company as a whole while getting exposure to all departments and how they operate.

Success in the Role: What are performance outcomes over the first half and second half of the internship you will work toward completing?

In the first 5 weeks, you will:

• Understand Evolv, our product and culture, what we do, and why we do it
• Know the system and gain knowledge on how to operate the system
• Be able to troubleshoot basic problems within the Express system
• Identify what software changes you can make that will better the system

In the last 5 weeks, you will:

• Develop a piece of software that is integrated with our code base and makes an improvement to the system behavior
• Learn how to operate within an existing large code base
• Create a system that can create a better image for the guard to look at to identify the person and threats that are being detected

• Have helped to make a more reliable and responsive system for a safer place
• Have a better idea of what you want or don’t want out of your career

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

• Gain technical development skills by understanding our system and understanding the scope of the work within the system
• Develop problem solving skills by coming up with proposed solutions and vetting them by complexity, feasibility, and suitability
• You will have strong team engagement by learning the “buy in” from the decision makers for the proposed solution, especially if customer facing
• Create a piece of working, tested, software that answers one of our needs as identified by you!

• Develop business acumen by sitting in on department Q&As and Executive Leadership presentations to gain knowledge from individuals in different departments and levels at Evolv

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team?

• You will be joining the R&D Team and reporting to the Principal Software Engineer. The Software Engineering team is comprised of 5 team members whose roles vary from Software Engineers, Systems Engineers, and Software Application Developers.
• The team culture is one based on building trust, collaboration, on-going development through kindness, authenticity, courage, drive and fun!

Where is the role located?

• The location of this role is based in Waltham, MA with some flexibility in being remote some days.
