The HSE Specialist reports to Site HSE Manager and is responsible for assisting in the development, an implementation, of the site Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) activities as part of the overall deployment of the regional HSE program. Through the development of an overall Safety, Security and Environmental Management System, Mars has embedded this value into the organization. The site Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Specialist plays an essential role in this management system through hands-on execution of the Global / Regional HSE Standards, fostering a robust HSE culture and driving associate involvement. Context and Scope: Incumbent will assist with the execution of HSE activities, in full alignment with the site HSE Manager and in compliance with federal, state, local, and Mars requirements. The site HSE Specialist works with the Site HSE manager and collaborates with other site representatives to ensure the overall corporate HSE strategy is refined for the site and executed minimizing the Company's general liability and exposure to safety, environmental compliance, and security risks. Further, understanding of key business drivers and its relation to the role is equally important.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 1-5 years experience managing safety and environmental programs or projects in a manufacturing environment or school-related program
  • Ability to interact with site-level manufacturing/business management and regulatory agencies is required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including a high level of comfort in developing and delivering training and motivational presentations to all levels of associates is a must.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in science (ex. engineering, safety, IH, etc.) is preferred
  • Basic knowledge of food manufacturing and GMP a plus. Demonstrated leadership in driving a program/system of safety or environment in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with hazard recognition, behavioral-based safety, and job hazard analysis is desired
  • Experience in the management of Security functions is a plus.

Knowledge / Experience

Delivers training and coaching to establish clear understanding/engagement by all site associates on HSE expectations.

  • Ensures investigation of all HSE-related incidents utilizing specific tools to drive to root cause and identify actions to prevent a recurrence. Drives completion of recognized corrective actions to prevent incident recurrence are effectively implemented, this includes execution of corrective actions developed from other site incidents.
  • Serves in conjunction with site HSE Manager, as a HSE technical expert, providing technical expertise/coaching as needed in all areas and initiatives of the function to include capital project review and risks management associated with non-capital modifications.
  • Ability to influence where direct lines of authority do not exist. Leads and ensures the site emergency response team (ERT) has the tools, skills and knowledge to effectively respond to site HSE emergencies.
  • Leads site efforts to measure and improve Industrial Hygiene Risk. This includes but is not limited to ergonomics, dust, noise, and chemical exposure. Coordinates all necessary IH and audiometric monitoring.
  • Owns the overall site Contractor Safety program to reduce risk associate with construction and trade contactor activity. Ensures project managers are accountable for proper management of contactors.
  • Assists with execution of site security requirements in order to meet corporate standards and with the oversight of security operations on the site. This includes management of contract security providers.
  • Supports the Mars Global Security Program by implementing standards and best practices.
  • Manage Risk Management activities associated with asset conservation and property loss control. Drives timely corrective actions to third party loss risk assessments and audits.
  • Works with third party risk control experts to ensure compliance with company standards on new projects. Supports audit efforts to maintain and improve favorable insurance ratings.

Principal Accountabilities - Support: Supports the site management team to foster a caring culture where safety, health and environment are ingrained as a core value equal to other business functions within the site.

  • Partners with other key functions on initiatives including Engineering, Operations, P&O, and Quality to develop and deliver site-based goals and plans.
  • The Site HSE Specialist collaborates with other function leaders to drive the overall business objectives of the site.
  • Effectively leads, coaches and develops operations line supervision to be effective HSE leaders/coaches in their respective positions.
  • Special projects/responsibilities as assigned.

What will be your key responsibilities?

  • Maintain Industrial Safety program documents and Critical Standards in the workplace.
  • Support Security across the site by working with the onsite security team and off site local FDP and Police Dept
  • Manages the Food Defense program, supports labeling of hazardous chemicals, support maintaining a chemical inventory of hazardous materials.
  • Work with Site's HSE Manager to ensure record keeping and required reporting is met for OSHA compliance, and other similar regulatory activities for the company & contractors.
  • Facilitate Emergency Response planning and site walkthroughs and inspections
  • Updating HSE procedures
  • Environmental water compliance
  • MSE Safety Pillar involvement

Context and Scope:

  • Takes clear direction from HSE Manager and meeting site IBOs
  • Perform proactive safety activities to reduce injuries at the site
  • Must be able to communicate and connect to operational teams on all shifts
  • Track inspection results and report
  • Lead by example in improving the safety culture
