UKCEH is looking for a Hydrological Data Analyst to join our 600-strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.

Working at UKCEH is rewarding. Our science makes a real difference, enabling people and the environment to prosper, and enriching society. We are the custodians of a wealth of environmental data, collected by UKCEH and its predecessors over the course of more than 60 years.

As a valued member of our team, you’ll get:

  • 27 days annual leave, rising to 29 days after five years
  • 10% employer pension contribution
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity leave
  • 24 hour, 365-day access to support with physical, mental, social, health or financial issues plus access to our trained Welfare Officers
  • Flexible working opportunities

And much more...

You’ll be joining our acclaimed Water Resources science area, working on our exciting Floods and Droughts Research Infrastructure (FDRI) project with software developers, data scientists and support technicians, and will be responsible for the development of new hydrological data products, analysis of existing catchment data, and production of materials (coding examples and training documentation) to help researchers make use of FDRI outputs.

FDRI will be producing new monitoring data from a wide range of sources and technologies (gauging stations, soil moisture probes, ADCPs, UAVS) and providing improved access to existing UK-wide monitoring data (e.g. rainfall, river flow, water quality). There’s lots of interest in the development of new data products that can be directly used in hydrological research, for example high resolution gridded rainfall, river flow uncertainty, or river bathymetry.

You will be responsible for reviewing and quality controlling existing datasets and data products, applying your hydrological knowledge to interpreting and understanding datasets, researching, developing and operationalising new data products, including working with software developers to implement code within robust, cloud-based systems.

You’ll be joining a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute that’s committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support you need to thrive at UKCEH.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking analysis of existing datasets such as UK-wide rainfall, river flow, river flow uncertainty measures, rain-radar, etc.
  • Working with FDRI colleagues to interpret end user requirements and identify priority areas for data product development
  • Undertaking research in order to define and develop approaches for the creation of new data products
  • Working with Research Software Engineers to implement data product development code within robust cloud-based infrastructures
  • Documenting outputs and developing materials to enhance the uptake of FDRI data
  • Engaging with end users to understand requirements and describe and promote outputs (e.g. conference presentations)

You will be working as part of a larger team of experienced hydrologists, software developers and engineers, and data scientists with significant opportunities to develop your skills and work across several different areas of hydrological data applications.

For the role of Hydrological Data Analyst, we’re looking for somebody who has:

  • A degree in Geography, Environmental science, Physics, Mathematics or Computing, or equivalent, plus MSc / PhD in a relevant subject or comparable work experience
  • Knowledge of hydrological processes, hydrological monitoring and UK hydrological data
  • Experience in analysis and processing of environmental data at different scales
  • Demonstrable knowledge of coding best practice (e.g. in python), including version control, testing, and documentation

If we’ve just described you, we’d love to meet. To apply, please send us your CV, accompanied by a covering letter which highlights any relevant skills and experience you feel would be well suited for this particular role.
