Summary
You will serve as a INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the Industrial Hygiene Program Office (IHPO) of NMRTC BREMERTON WA.
This announcement uses the Expansion of Direct Hire Authority for Certain Personnel to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.
SALARY RANGE: GS-11 $81,242-$105,612 // GS-12 $97,376-$126,585

- Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

- A favorable Tier 3 background investigation is required for all Non-Critical Sensitive (NCS) positions with access to network systems and Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
- In accordance with BUMEDINST 6220.9B, this position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
- During industrial hygiene inspections, survey, and evaluations the employee is exposed to an extensive variety of hazardous environments. These include both physical and chemical agents. The use of protective clothing and equipment is required.
- Inspections require moderate physical exertion, including walking, standing and carrying many items of equipment used in sampling.
Qualifications
- Utilizing industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices to perform, organize and/or direct on-site surveys and investigations in various shops, aboard ships and aircraft, and conducts literature research to determine nature and severity of hazards present;
- Evaluating physical and chemical hazards such as noise, explosives, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, pesticides within a workplace environment;
- Utilizing and calibrate industrial hygiene measurement equipment such as indoor air quality meters, infrared analyzers, ventilation equipment, sampling pumps and flow meters, and sound level meters/noise dosimeters to evaluate occupational stressors;
- Developing training programs on industrial hygiene and occupational health issues; AND
- Implementing/administering industrial hygiene matters and federal regulations on physical and chemical hazards in the workplace.
GS-11: In addition to meeting the BASIC REQUIREMENT-Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
- Applying industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices carrying out all industrial hygiene programs;
- Evaluating occupational health hazards to include those for which the nature and extent of hazard is not completely understood;
- Devising control measures for ventilation, shielding, material, substitution, and change in work procedures;
- Investigating health problems which arise among workers to determine probable cause; AND
- Drafting industrial hygiene policy and guidance for occupational health and safety professionals.

Basic Requirements:
The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
- A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; (Your transcripts must be attached.) Failure to submit a copy of your transcripts with your application will result in an ineligible rating. OR
- A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; .(Your transcripts must be attached.) Failure to submit a copy of your transcripts with your application will result in an ineligible rating. OR
- Certification from the Redirect from ABIH.org - Board for Global EHS Credentialing (gobgc.org) (ABIH). (A copy of your license or registration must be attached) Failure to submit a copy of your license or registration with your application will result in an ineligible rating.
Evaluation of Education
All science or engineering courses offered in fulfillment of the above requirements must be acceptable for credit toward the completion of a standard 4-year professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in science or engineering at an accredited college or university. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum.SUBSTITUTIUON OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:
FOR GS-11 SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position:
Successful completion of Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to the position. If you are using education to qualify, you MUST submit a complete copy of transcripts Failure to submit this information WILL result in an ineligible rating.
