Summary

This is an office-centered position*--you must physically report to the duty station stated in this announcement on a regular basis.

If you are selected, you will be required to complete a Confidential Financial Disclosure form within 30 days of your first day of employment and annually thereafter.

Participation in the medical monitoring program is required.

This position requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

If you are selected, you may be required to complete a one-year probationary period.

This position is designated as Moderate Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation. All conditions of the pre-employment security process must be met before an official letter of employment can be issued with a report for duty date.

Qualifications

NOTE:  You must meet qualification requirements, including any requirements described in the Education section, by the closing date of this announcement.

In addition to the basic entry education requirements, you must have specialized experience and/or directly related education as described below:

To qualify for the GS-11 level, you must have one of the following:

  • 1 year of full-time* specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level defined as assisting in developing safety plans, policies, standards and/or training materials; implementing changes to an industrial hygiene program. 
  • 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree; or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; the education must be directly related and provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position
  • equivalent combination of education and experience

To qualify for the GS-12 level, you must have 1 year of full-time* specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level defined as conducting occupational, environmental, and industrial hygiene hazard and risk assessments; and advising a variety of internal and external staff on policies, regulations, and processes related to occupational health and hazards and industrial hygiene.  

Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: 

  • Knowledge of industrial hygiene principles and concepts sufficient to establish new safety, occupational, and environmental health principles and practices
  • Knowledge of environmental science principles, theories and practices sufficient to identify and resolve common problems involving conventional laboratory and office settings
  • Ability to improve the safety of workers and the surrounding community
  • Knowledge of office and laboratory building design, construction standards, methods and practices sufficient to evaluate compliance with safety and occupational health
  • Ability to recognize and evaluate occupational hazards
  • Ability to identify safety features on proposed equipment requests
  • Ability to conduct investigations on accidents, injuries or property damage
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of hazardous and complex operations and conditions found in research laboratories
  • Ability to develop procedures to prevent or reduce mishap

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related sciences; or a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).  NOTE:  Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
