Summary:

The IndyCar Hybrid Support Engineer will be required to have a complete understanding of all aspects of hybrid technology used for IndyCar racing applications, which will include preparation, building, testing and maintenance of hybrid units. Constant interaction between the various shop departments and race teams is a vital part of the position.

Essential Job Functions (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities):

  • Assist with assembly and disassembly of hybrid systems
  • Educate race teams on proper installation, maintenance and operation of the hybrid equipment
  • Support hybrid testing on engine dynamometer
  • Troubleshoot and resolve on track and test issues and generate fault reports
  • Monitor and resolve mechanical and electrical issues as they arise on the chassis and Hybrid test equipment
  • Lead rapid decision making on repairs or hybrid unit swaps at race/test events and engine test facilities
  • Analyze data from dynamometer and track activity to establish reliability and performance issues, usage trends and opportunities for performance improvement and optimization
  • Assist with creating simulation models and performance studies to optimize deployment and regeneration strategies
  • Enter and track hybrid system operating statistics
  • Read electrical drawings and pinouts
  • Other duties as assigned

Travel – This position is based in Plymouth, MI and will require travel to race events and track tests at various times throughout the year to verify hybrid performance and operational targets are being met. May also require additional travel to further the aims of the IndyCar hybrid program, facilitate new hybrid installations and assist race team engine startups.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Electrical Engineering preferred
  • 2 + years of post-grad experience
  • Experience in automotive electrical systems and troubleshooting
  • Experience with CAN (IndyCar electrical communication standard)
  • Must possess strong mechanical aptitude, ability to use basic measuring tools, and hands-on capabilities
  • Highly proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to travel extensively, including internationally
  • Preferred experience in racing
  • Preferred experience with electrical testing
