This position is located in the Bureau of Land Management- Little Snake Field Office with duty in one of the following locations:
- Craig, CO
- Grand Junction, CO
- Meeker, CO

Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENT For the Mining Engineer, GS-0880, you must possess one of the following:
A. Successfully completed a Bachelor's degree (or higher) in engineering. The curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). (NOTE: You must provide a copy of your transcripts.)
OR,
B. Successfully completed a bachelor's degree (or higher) in engineering. The curriculum must have included differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. OR,
C. Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. -OR- achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g., State grandfather or eminence provisions) and are eligible for this position because it is within or closely related to the specialty field of your registration. (NOTE: You must provide a copy of your registration or licensure.)
OR,
D. Have successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico. (NOTE: You must provide proof of passing the examination/test.)
OR,
E. Have successfully completed at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical and engineering sciences, and that included the courses specified in the basic requirements in statement B above. The courses were fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program in statements A or B above. (NOTE: You must provide a copy of your transcripts.)
OR,
F. Have successfully completed a curriculum leading to a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, (examples of related curricula are not all-inclusive) in lieu of a Bachelor's degree in engineering, AND have at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. (NOTE: You must provide a copy of your transcripts and an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions.)
BASIC REQUIREMENT For the Geologist, GS-1350, you must possess ONE of the following:
A. Successfully completed a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited college or university in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. (NOTE: You must provide a copy of your transcripts.)
OR,
B. A combination of education and experience, that includes course work as shown in A above [20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography] PLUS, appropriate experience or additional education related to this position. The quality of the combination of education and experience must be comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in one of the fields stated in A above. This combination must be sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties of a professional Geologist. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT FOR THE GRADE GS-12:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following mining engineering or geologist principles, methods, and techniques: (1) planning and conducting analytical and engineering or geological evaluations, (2) designing generic mine plans which include equipment selection and sequencing, optimization of mining methods; (3) compiling, updating, and retrieving information from data base management systems; (4) providing support on salable minerals, mineral material pits, free use permits and locatable minerals operations.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".
Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
There is no substitution of education for experience at the GS-12 grade level of this announcement.
Additional information
Physical Demands: The work includes both office and field conditions covering all Western Slope lands. Office work involves long periods of intense concentration on technical details. Most field work requires physical stamina and is often under a variety of arduous conditions, including travel by 4-wheel drive vehicle or on foot over rugged, slippery, and/or hazardous terrain, exposure to extreme temperature and weather conditions, as well as topographic extremes and visits to underground mines. The incumbent may be required to perform duties that require recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, or lifting. Work may also include lifting of moderately heavy items, such equipment and samples and could be up to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: The incumbent works in a typical office setting and must tolerate an average amount of conversation, telephone and other similar office distractions and background noise resulting from the "cubicle/open space" arrangements. The incumbent travels to office settings in all field offices as well as in mine locations. Incumbent may be subjected to high/low temperatures ranging from 10degrees to over 100 degrees, dust and high levels of noise and vibration. The incumbent may be subjected to hostile wildlife, chemical and physical hazards in the field. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer for these specialized activities. The incumbent will wear appropriate safety gear when conducting inspection and field activities and maintains a safety conscious attitude and training when available. When completing work assignments that require operating a motorized vehicle, the incumbent must remain alert for safety hazards.
Tax Law Impact for PCS: Moving expenses reimbursement is a taxable benefit. However, the Federal Travel Regulation 18-05 issued by General Services Administration has authorized agencies to use the Withholding Tax Allowance and Relocation Income Tax Allowance to pay for "substantially all" of the increased tax liability resulting from the "2018 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act" for certain eligible individuals.
