Qualifications
To qualifyfor this GS-12 Interior Designer position you must demonstrate
(1) at least 52 weeks of Specialized Experience (see below) - AND -
(2) the Selective Placement Factor (see below)
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE must have been gained in a federal position at or above GS-11 OR (if your position/experience is in another federal pay scale OR outside of federal service) by performing duties at a level equivalent to GS-11.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is work primarily concerned with the design and alteration of interior office spaces to meet functional and aesthetic business needs, including design analysis and space planning involving interior construction, building systems and components, building codes, equipment, materials and furnishings.
If you have this experience, you must describe, in your own words, the duties you perform that pertain to the requirements for this position.
Since Specialized Experience also has a time component, it must be evident that the duties you describe are at the required level for at least 52 weeks.

SAMPLE DUTIES THAT DEMONSTRATE SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE INCLUDE:
-- identifying, researching or solving problems pertaining to the function or quality of the interior environment;
-- performing services relative to interior spaces, such as design analysis, space planning or aesthetics;
-- applying knowledge of interior construction, including building components, building codes, equipment, materials or furnishings;
-- preparing drawings or documents relative to the design of interior spaces in order to enhance and protect the health, safety or welfare of the public;
-- integrating mechanical, electrical or structural engineering disciplines within the interior context; and
-- managing projects (e.g., developing cost estimates, evaluating bid proposals, reviewing construction documents, participating in on-site construction visits, conducting pre- and post-occupancy evaluations, developing standards for efficient space management, etc).
(2) SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: Knowledge of the concepts, principles and practices of interior design
To meet this requirement, you must demonstrate at least 4 of the following experiences:
-- experience designing, planning and/or renovating facility (i.e., office) interiors to optimize the safety, efficiency and appearance of the space
-- experience incorporating new interior design developments or technologies into various phases of facilities construction
-- experience preparing furniture packages, including conventional and systems furniture drawings, cost-summaries and other procurement information
-- experience applying knowledge of building codes and regulations, industry standards and policies to alterations and rehabilitation of the interiors of facilities
-- experience collaborating with architects, engineers and/or construction teams to plan and develop interior design aspects for large, complex facilities or highly sensitive projects
-- experience contributing ideas for developing Interior Design standards

CONDITIONS OF POSITION:
Successful performance of work in this position and adherence to these conditions will be assessed during the 1-year probationary period that may be served by new appointees.
The work is mostly sedentary; however, some walking, bending and climbing is required to inspect buildings at various stages of construction and to investigate reported problems.
Work is primarily in an office setting and no unusual hazards exist.
May be subject to related construction hazards when visiting and investigating onsite operations, repair and improvement or construction activities.
Some travel is required to conduct architectural studies on various SSA building facilities and meet with regional representatives.
Education
This position does not have an educational requirement.
Education cannot be used in lieu of (or in combination with) Specialized Experience to meet Minimum Qualifications.

This position is on a full-time, flex-time schedule; Alternate Work Schedules (AWS) may be authorized.
Telework may be approved after all conditions for telework have been met.
This position is not authorized to be filled virtually or through outstationing. The Official Duty Station (ODS) for this position is SSA Headquarters, Woodlawn, Maryland. To participate in telework, you must reside within a 2-hour commute to this ODS by the time of your appointment.
Relocation expenses will not be paid; salary will be set in accordance with locality pay provisions.
Successful performance of work in this position and adherence to conditions of this position will be assessed during the 1-year probationary period that may be served by new appointees (e.g., new to SSA and/or new to this series).
