2023-2024 Internships - Opinion

The Detroit Free Press/freep.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking an intern. The award-winning opinion page produces deeply reported political and policy analysis that represents and advocates for the issues most important to our communities, and we're looking for an intern to help fulfill this mission.

This paid part-time internship program gives current college students, graduate students or recent graduates the opportunity to spend up to 24 weeks working part-time alongside Freep opinion staff, as the 2024 election cycle ramps up, and the upcoming presidential primaries.

The internship will include one-on-one coaching and mentoring, but interns are expected to work independently and effectively in a deadline-driven environment. The internship is hybrid; some in-office hours are required.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the development and execution of Freep opinion's social media strategy.
  • Work in collaboration with the Free Press digital team to produce opinion content for platforms including Instagram and TikTok.
  • Assist in promoting opinion pieces on traditional and nontraditional platforms.
  • Maximize the impact of the Free Press opinion team's work through search engine optimization and digital presentation.
  • Perform tasks such as compiling letters to the editor and processing guest columns.
  • Work on the Free Press' highly rated voter guide, an essential tool for connecting our readers with candidate information.
  • Assist with basic editing and fact-checking of reader and guest contributions.
  • Contribute occasional written pieces.
  • Gather information from sources at any location and through any means commonly available for news stories.
  • Interview subjects in person, over the telephone or in writing via various platforms.
  • Research written materials, graphics and photographic materials, as well as audio and video recordings.
  • Help place or create photographs and graphics that will support columns and editorials.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions.

Knowledge and skills:

  • Curiosity, versatility, flexibility, communication, collaboration and willingness to learn.
  • Facility with social media platforms.
  • Interest in politics a plus.
  • Strong command of AP writing, spelling, grammar, and style.
  • Solid fact checking and reporting skills.
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented and flexible.
  • Open to new ideas, new experiences and learning on the job.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Technical skills (will vary depending on the assignment).
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience performing a wide variety of tasks under the pressure of deadlines.

Requirements:

  • College students, graduate students, recent graduates or young journalists able to manage a part-time, 24-week internship.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Proficiency in modern business programs like MS Word and Google docs.
  • This role requires a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check, a motor vehicle record check & drug screen.

Application Instructions:

We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don't limit your upload to a resume; show us what you've done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:

  • Your resume - one to two pages.
  • A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.
  • Links to 3-6 online samples of your work. Show us what you've produced, or had a hand in producing, that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.

It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
