We are looking for highly motivated, enthusiastic college students for our 12-week paid summer internship program.

The User Experience (UX) Intern will assist the User Experience Department with designing the digital user interfaces for First Merchants' digital and omni experiences, including the mobile app, online banking portal, website, banking center applications, and more. The UX intern will have visibility into the strategies, processes, and methodologies that we use to design great experiences on behalf of our users. The UX intern will have the opportunity to apply their academic skills and develop problem-solving and design skills within an innovative, growing, and high-demand environment while learning about the banking industry. The UX intern role is a remote, work-from-home position based in Columbus, Ohio.

As a UX Intern at First Merchants Bank, you can expect to learn and contribute to:

  1. User experience best practices, processes, and strategies
  2. Skills in applying the Design Thinking framework to innovative problem solving
  3. Mentorship from experienced UX practitioners
  4. Research methodologies and best practices from practical synthesis and insight translation of data and research outputs
  5. Production of deliverables for leadership and stakeholders (presentations, templates, comps, etc.)
  6. Translating complex business and user needs into engaging, and easy-to-use solutions
  7. Participation in facilitated user research, brainstorming, Design Sprints, and other Design Thinking sessions
  8. Experience interfacing with corporate marketing, technology, product, and other teams
  9. Cross-functional teams which are important to the user experience process (business analysis, value management, product, etc.)

In addition to the learning objectives, all interns will participate as a group in a community service project. There will also be the opportunity to network with our Senior Leaders during our final presentation event in the last week of the program. Each intern will present to the wider intern group, managers and senior leaders about the projects they were involved in and takeaways that will help them be successful in their careers.

Who is qualified to apply?

Students must:

  • be a degree-seeking full time student at an accredited college or university.
  • be available to work 40 hours per week from May 15, 2023 through August 4, 2023.
  • be authorized to work in the United States.
  • have demonstrated interest in the industry and/or specific area of interest as exemplified through past work experience, internships and/or major course of study.
  • possess a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • have strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • have strong written and verbal communication skills

The User Experience Intern should:

  • Be actively pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Graphic Design, Human Centered Design, Marketing, or a closely related field
  • Provide a design portfolio demonstrating UX and visual design (if applying as a designer)
  • Have a solid foundation of user experience / human-centered design and research principles
  • Have a passion for innovation, simplifying the complex, improving people's experience with digital tools, and challenging norms
  • Be able to work on multiple projects with proficient time management
  • Have a positive, can-do attitude
  • Have experience using Adobe Creative Suite design tools
  • Experience using interface design and prototyping tools (Adobe XD, Figma, etc.) is a huge plus
