How you will help us create value together:
As a Intern - User Experience/User Interface (UX/UI) Designer for Safety Solutions, you will be responsible for contributing to the creation of innovative experiences for web, desktop, and/or mobile platforms supporting Komatsu safety initiatives within the Surface Mining Product Management team. Specifically, you will be supporting safety initiatives including Elimination of Live Work (ELW), reducing vehicle interactions, risk management, and functional safety. You will use your expertise to support a variety of UX/UI projects, including for new applications, continuous improvement of existing applications, and/or R&D projects - ultimately expanding Komatsu digital solutions to support the Komatsu surface mining safety vision of get home safe tonight.
This position is based in our Milwaukee, WI location. The target start date for this role is Summer 2024 and has potential to be extended into the Fall 2024 school semester. We offer full-time hours during the summer and flexible part-time hours during the academic year.
Key Job Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities may include:
- Collaborating with subject matter experts to develop UX/UI layouts.
- Providing input and advice around innovation, complexity, feasibility, and human factors of UX/UI designs.
- Engaging with software developers to create applications.
- Assist in the creation of Power BI or other dashboard applications to allow reporting of various safety metrics.
- Assist in the creation of marketing and technical presentation material related applications.
- Complete internal and external presentations on work results.
Qualifications/Requirements
Basic Qualifications:
- Pursuing a bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information or Interaction Design, Human Factors, or similar field of study.
- Junior, senior, or graduate level student in good academic standing.
- Strong attention to detail and a high level of appreciation for design.
- Effective communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
- An understanding of the psychology of human-computer interaction.
- Proficiency with computer applications appropriate to the position.
- Familiarity with design tools such Figma, Axure, Adobe XD, Sketch, InVision, etc.
- Ability to refine designs throughout the development process due to scope change and technical limitations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of programming languages such as HTML, CSS and Javascript.
- Familiarity with front-end UI and Javascript frameworks and libraries (ex. Bootstrap, JQuery, etc.)
- Familiarity with code repositories such as, GitHub, Codepen, etc.
- Proficient with data analysis and visualization tools (Excel, Power BI)
- Desire to stay up-to-date on the latest technology trends such as AR, VR, AI, etc.
