Team Overview
The Moody's RMS Severe and Winter Weather team, based in London, sits within the company's Model Development group as part of the Models and Data Business Unit.
The team work closely with other hazard, vulnerability, exposure, and financial modelers to quantify the loss potential of severe and winter weather events and to ensure the accuracy, efficiency, and appropriateness of the final modelling product. We function as a multidisciplinary team of catastrophe modelers including statisticians, mathematicians, physical scientists, and engineers, who build models critical to our Re/Insurance clients and other markets that Moody's RMS serve.
Overview of role/responsibilities for the intern
This role will perform research and development work to advance our understanding of turbulent wind flow in urban environments.
The successful candidate will work closely with experienced catastrophe modelers to prototype and advance the building of mathematical models that simulate the impacts of complex urban morphologies on extreme winds associated with severe weather.
Qualifications:
Minimum:
- A Master's degree in a related subject (e.g., Boundary Layer Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology, Climate Science, Wind Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or similar).
- Strong experience of computational fluid dynamics approaches to model aerodynamic parameters (RANS / LES / DNS)
- Sound mathematical and statistical foundations.
- Strong ability in programming languages used in model development (e.g., Julia, R, Python).
- Good skills in a Linux/Unix environment and experience of a version control system such as GitHub.
- Critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate analysis results and insights effectively.
- Driven and committed, demonstrating self-motivation as well as strong team working skills.
Advantage:
- Experience with ML/AI
- Experience with atmospheric and/or landcover datasets (building morphology, in particular)
- Familiarity with configuring established open-source CFD/LES models such as WRF-LES or PALM
- Familiarity with visualizing land cover data in QGIS
- Familiarity with Fortran (fluency not required)
- Deep knowledge of atmospheric boundary-layer meteorology
