Job Description

The Investment Research Group (IRG) is the centralized investment team within BBH Private Banking's Private Wealth Management business that is responsible for asset and capital allocation, manager selection, and investment decisions. Currently IRG oversees an asset base in excess of $45 billion dollars that is invested in over 25 different internal and external investment strategies.

The IRG Head of Investment Operations is a new position that will be responsible for leading, training, and mentoring the IRG Investment Operations team. This team provides operational (i.e., non-investment-related) support to IRG, serving as a liaison between the Investment team and the various BBH Operational support teams and implementing operational solutions that enhance the investment decision-making and execution processes. In so doing, the Head of Investment Operations will help to manage, monitor, and oversee the implementation of the investment program. The Head of Investment Operations will also provide leadership, management, and vision necessary to ensure that IRG has the proper strategies, operational controls, technological, administrative, and reporting procedures and systems in place to support continued growth in assets under management and increased numbers of managers, both public and private. To achieve these objectives, the Head of Investment Operations will work closely with other BBH teams, including the Office of the General Counsel, our proprietary investment structuring teams, trading teams, and risk and compliance teams.

Working together with these teams and the Investment Operations Analyst(s), the Head of Investment Operations will help drive strategies that enhance investment delivery, execute investment decisions, and coordinate resources across the firm to sustain improvement in processes. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to: (1) policy portfolio implementation and manager onboarding: (2) technology assessment, implementation, and monitoring; (3) performance and other client reporting; (4) legal and tax coordination; and (5) strategy.

Responsibilities

Investment Policy Portfolio Implementation and Manager Onboarding:

  • Propose solutions to automate and streamline the process for implementing policy portfolio models for various client types.
  • Ensure effective execution of new manager onboarding, including evaluating the appropriateness of the structure (mutual fund, separately managed account, private fund, etc.), executing legal documents, assessing tax efficiency, updating policy portfolios, estimating demand and capacity needs, etc.
  • Work with Investment Product Management to ensure that IRG's investment decisions are properly executed and communicated.
  • Assist with manager sizing recommendation process across the various policy portfolios
  • Identify operational needs associated with new investments, portfolio activity, and exits, and assist with project management; Assist in overseeing and tracking all deliverables related to new manager launches and manager redemptions
  • Facilitate flow of information to the various operations, accounting, and trading teams and BBH Investor Services, and provide support for internal audits, as needed

Strategy:

  • Participate as a member of the senior group within IRG in evaluating key elements of investment decisions such as fee negotiations, target investment sizes, capacity restrictions, tax matters, etc.
  • Serve as the point person for modeling and tracking BBH's investments in private fund managers, including sizing recommendations, liquidity metrics, and cash flow projections

Technology and Systems:

  • Work with external consultants and internal operational strategy professionals, lead process improvement and technology projects, including sourcing, vetting and implementation of third-party service providers
  • Monitor IRG processes and determine if there are technological solutions that provide for process enhancements
  • Provide end-to-end leadership to implement enhancements and initiatives to improve our research management systems
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of an external IRG webpage

Performance and Other Client Reporting:

  • Participate into a firm wide working group to evaluate client reporting, including benchmarking, transparency, etc.
  • Manage generation of IRG Performance Packet and the abbreviated version for the front office
  • Help to enhance IRG's quantitative analytics, including statistics around portfolio risk management

Legal and Tax Coordination:

  • Work with the legal department to execute new manager contracts, term sheets, PPMs, etc.
  • Track tax impact of investments and provide context for tax estimates of capital gains, ordinary income, etc.
  • Improve process for efficiently tracking the tax efficiency of manager strategies

Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of direct experience in managing the operations for an investment organization
  • Deep knowledge of the investment management industry including different investment structures, valuation, tax, performance, and legal considerations
  • Familiarity and comfort with project management, and process improvement
  • Organized and disciplined self-starter with ability to take ownership of responsibilities and projects and execute to a high standard
  • Strong communicator, both written and verbal
  • A proactive interest in streamlining processes, and knowledge of available technology in that pursuit
  • Strong conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Intellectual curiosity and a desire to learn and grow professionally
  • A team player; strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • The highest level of integrity

Total Rewards:

BBH's compensation program includes base salary, discretionary bonuses, and profit-sharing. The anticipated base salary range for this role is $140-$170K, which is specific to New York and may differ in other locations due to cost of living and labor considerations. Base salaries may vary based on factors such as skill, experience and qualification for the role.
