Description

Network Security Engineer

Purpose: Southern Company is seeking a passionate and capable Network Security Engineer to join our Technology Security organization. This position will support the Enterprise IT network security infrastructure leveraged by our security teams and business units across the company.

In this role you will provide oversight, governance, and change management approval for our corporate firewalls, support the corporate VPN infrastructure, and much more. This position partners with other business unit SMEs to enhance the company's perimeter defenses and ensure the technologies are fully utilized as intended in the protection of Southern Company's cyber related assets. The role is a technical hands-on role with a great deal of troubleshooting and problem-solving opportunities.

Education / Experience / Skills:

  • Possess an in-depth knowledge of information security methodologies, tools, technologies, and best practices and how they relate to the organization
  • 3 years' experience in positions directly related to cyber security infrastructure support, information security, information technology, and/or consulting expertise
  • 2 years' experience with firewall technologies (Palo Alto, Cisco) including hands-on experience in firewall configuration, policy management, analysis of infrastructure communications, etc.
  • Understanding of key firewall concepts including but not limited to VPN, NAT, URL filtering, SSL decryption, application filtering, etc.
  • Familiarity with Panorama, Global Protect, WildFire, and other Palo Alto features including but not limited to SSL decryption, custom App ID creation.
  • Experience with VPN configuration, troubleshooting, and problem resolution
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues in a systematic and logical manner, and maintain good communications with all relevant parties throughout troubleshooting process
  • Well-versed with networking basics (ex: TCP/IP, OSI model) and routing concepts
  • Experience with Wireshark and other protocol analyzers
  • Familiar with procedures, such as change management, automation, and revision control
  • Work with vendors where appropriate to escalate issues
  • Experience with development and maintenance of high-level and low-level design documentation
  • Adaptable and a quick learner with initiative and follow through
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a high-pressure environment
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills; ability to solve complex technical issues
Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide security oversight and governance for network and firewall infrastructure including firewall rulesets, intrusion prevention policies, exception requests, etc.
  • Support and ensure resiliency of corporate VPN infrastructure
  • Maintain security policies related to URL filtering, SSL decryption, etc.
  • Quickly respond to production outages and perform effective troubleshooting
  • Identify root cause of issues and make appropriate recommendations to avoid future failure
  • Develop requirements for firewall rule implementation including source and destination IPs, ports, and transport protocol
  • Works with an experienced team of network security engineers in performing vulnerability and fault analysis on enterprise level devices, and developing and implementing system remediation and recovery plans
  • Collaborate with teams across Technology Security to implement enhanced security controls for our perimeter defenses
  • Engage with the Technology Organization and business units to evaluate and implement security processes for critical infrastructure and key resources
  • Establishes and executes program updates as necessary to adapt to the changing threat landscape as well as local, state, and federal security requirements
  • Perform security testing and audits to identify gaps and resolve weaknesses
  • Research security enhancements and make recommendations to management
