BACKGROUND

How do economies continue to grow? The World Development Report 2024: Economic Growth in Middle Income Countries (WDR2024) will tackle this most fundamental question for middle income countries. With more than 75 percent of the world's population, middle-income countries account for 40 percent of the global economy, 57 percent of global poor people, and 60 percent of global CO2 emissions. For these countries, simply accumulating new capital is losing luster, and focusing narrowly on ideas is an illusory pursuit. Instead, they need a new economic model tailored to their circumstances to accelerate their growth and development-and that of the rest of the world.

Part 1 of the Report will ask whether development in middle income countries differs from that in low- and high-income countries and whether there is a middle-income trap by focusing on key production factors. Part 2 of the Report will examine the forces of creative destruction that reshape enterprises, workers, and energy sources. The analytic framework will balance the forces of Creation, Preservation, and Destruction. Part 3 of the Report will draw on the facts around enterprises, workers, and energy and the analysis of the gale forces of Creation, Preservation, and Destruction to advise middle income countries on Making Miracles, a term coined by Nobel Laureate Robert Lucas in his search of practices producing long episodes of rapid income growth.

The Report's goal is to contribute to ongoing debates about the benefits of open economies, social mobility, technological change, and sustainability. The main objective is to propose specific policies for countries with different incomes and geographic locations, reflecting their great heterogeneity. A team drawn from across the World Bank, augmented by academic and policy experts, will tackle this task. Extensive consultations across countries and involving stakeholders at all levels will support the Report's preparation-to ensure that it provides highly relevant policy advice to World Bank clients.

OBJECTIVE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The World Bank is recruiting a Junior Professional Associate (JPA) to serve as a research assistant with the team. The primary duties and deliverables will be to assist the WDR team with any research and data analysis required for the report chapters.

TIMELINE

The JPA will provide services for the period from April 1, 2023 - March 30, 2024.

Selection Criteria

• Bachelor's degree in economics, finance, or a related field.
• Experience working with large datasets.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work flexibly, creatively and to multitask as the need arises.
• Familiarity or experience working in development economics or a related field.
• Excellent writing skills with the ability to draft key findings based on data results in a clear and concise manner.
• A high degree of self-motivation, a positive attitude and drive to deliver high quality work in accordance with tight deadlines.
• Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work in a multicultural environment.
• Demonstrated experience in working effectively as part of a team.
• Be 28 years of age or younger on your first day of service

MANAGEMENT

• The JPA will report to the lead chapter author of their respective chapters, with oversight from Somik Lall (WDR Director) and Joyce Ibrahim (WDR Manager).
