Lab Assistant Float - Wolf River/Park

Summary:

Performs preparatory portions of laboratory tests, to include specimen handling and processing, and the use of Laboratory Information System and Electronic Medical Records  Some laboratory testing performed within scope of practice under CLIA’88.  Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in West Cancer Center Vision and Values.

Education/Training & Experience:

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Expert level knowledge of specimen requirements and medical terminology, collection methods for blood, bone marrow, other fluids and tissue as indicated.
• Knowledge related to standard laboratory methods, practices, procedures, policies, regulations, and laboratory materials and equipment.
• Knowledge in laboratory quality assurance procedures.
• Demonstrates effective teamwork.
• Strong attention to detail skills.
• Proficient in computer skills including but not limited to LIS, EMR and Microsoft functions.
• Demonstrates quality customer service skills.
• Ability to effectively communicate verbally with Associates, physicians and other outside professionals.
• Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of own and others' work flow.

Key Job Responsibilities:

• Performs pre analytical and post analytical portions of laboratory tests within scope of practice under Tennessee Medical Laboratory Act.
• Effectively collects blood via venipuncture or implanted port access and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis.
• Assist with bone marrow collection and/or accessioning.
• Assist with other fluid, tissue collections and/or accessioning.
• Performs clerical duties as required.
• Assista with maintaining inventory and stocking of supplies and equipment in the laboratory areas according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
• Follows established procedures for laboratory quality assurance, ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards, safety, competency, and policies and procedures.

Supervision Provided by this Position:

• There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this job.

Physical Demands/Conditions:

• Invasive and non-invasive patient contact throughout the shift.
• Exposure to patient body fluids.
• Must be able to react quickly in emergency situations.
• Must be able to read, write, and communicate both orally and written to other individuals.
• Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 25 lbs. periodically throughout the shift.
• Must be able to stand, walk, climb stairs, sit in one place, squat and kneel periodically throughout shift.
• Must be able to reach, bend, and twist periodically throughout shift.
• Must have good balance and coordination.
• Use of hands for gripping and squeezing, as well as repetitive hand to wrist motion.
• Must have good hand-eye coordination.
• Normal eye-motor coordination, manual dexterity and visual perception.
